2nd Gen Newb. Questions. Help!

Hey guys im new for this 2nd gen cl area. Have some quick questions.

Im going to be looking at a 2001 CL-S this week and the seller stated that the 3rd gear slips....Need a new tranny right? If so, how much did you guys pay for a new one and where at?

Lastly...what kind of things should I look for, in terms of the motor and inside?

Thanks

if you're car is under 100k miles, take it to the dealership 'cause it's still under warranty

100,000 miles and below is fair game, free relpacement (and TSX Loaner in my case) A new tranny from the dealership is about $3-4,000's

extended warranty all depends on where it's from, if it's from acura (i forget what the terms are) you should be ok. If it's some random 3rd party warranty, it might have just been a waste of money in the first place. I was considering buying an extended warranty on my Subaru, until i read the fine print and pretty much the only way any of the parts would be covered is if the car completely broke down somewhere. I'd definitely ask him about the warranty and mileage though. You're also going to want to ask if it's been in any accidents and check all the panels to make sure the paint matches.

starting out with a car with a bad tranny might not be a good idea.

Clear title? Under 100K? Extended Warranty from Acura?

The tranny is covered till 100K extened warranty or not. The tranny warranty comes with the car. Reading some of the other posts and your questions, I just wanted to clarify that.

IMHO, I don't think it's that big of a deal to get a car and already have to replace the tranny if it's under warranty.

if it's not covered, then make sure to get an ex warranty. Welcome to the board!

I was debating whether to get a 2001 CLS for $9k or a 2002 TL non-S $11k...now if i get a CLS would need to replace the tranny and not worry about it for awhile....but if i get the TL sooner or later I might need to get a new tranny(probaly $13k-14k...when said and done for the TL

The CLs is black and the TL is white....Lolz.

Im looking towards the CLs bc its quicker (right?)

The TL..i can do more mods exterior wise....

Love the CL...so imma take a look at it first...Thanks guys ...Ill give you guys some updates this week or early next week...any more suggestions?

How many miles are on these cars? Because at the prices listed it seems they are high in mileage. Definately go with the S and if you can get the tranny replaced.

Tell him to give you a cash rebate of what it would cost to fix the tranny and do a 6spd swap.

Word..You already have the engine so doing a 6spd swap shouldn't be that expensive if you have connections.

Not sure I agree... at least he will get a new one (well rebuilt actually), so he will know the condition of it. My replacement tranny shifter quicker and harder than the original... I actually htought that it was better than the original, but I didn't want to chance it so I traded on a 6MT

Ugh... all transmissions are "bad" so with that logic you shouldn't ever buy a 2nd Gen CL/TL

Shouldn't be that expensive? The motor is all of $600 towards the swap. You still need to replace everything else you'd need to if you were starting with a CL-P or TL-P

Thanks guys.....

I went to test it today and it was nice......some things i didnt like is the tan interior...black with tan interior.

With the tranny...regular driving is fine...just stays at 3rd for a sec or two then shifts to fourth....

But once in awhile..out of no where the 3rd gets stuck or something....
and you have to use use the tiptronic to shift to 4th..

What do you guys think?

if the car has a clear title AND IS under 100k then it is still under the "tranny warranty" nothing else.
9k still seems too steep with a bad tranny. there could be something else wrong with the car or else why wont the current owner hv the tranny fixed thru the dealership himself?

Salvage and bad tranny, with possibility of unseen troubles? PASS! IMO, but if you are still thinking about it take it to a respectable body shop. Ask them to check the frame for abnormalities, basically, check the entire structure of the car. Be very careful.

Don't buy it. How many miles? You don't usually have ANY warranty with a salvage title. You will have to pay to fix the tranny yourself. Not worth it.

All the transmissions have the same faulty design and the same inadequate parts. They are all bad. Some people just get lucky.

Im sure everyone knows that there is a recall on the 2nd gear..right?

anyhow friend said when they bring it in for warranty theres suppose to be a fuel jet kit(if i remember correctly)...suppose to be installed. lolz..friend looked and it wasnt there...he said he brought it in. hah....ill keep ya updated.. thanks for the help

I don't blame you for passing. Salvaged title and a bad tranny?? No way. Good luck in the search, there's some good CL-S's out there.
