225/50s or 235/45s?

I'm pretty new on this forum and still trying to figure out all the great stuff here.
I have to replace tires on my 2001 CL-S with the stock rims. I'm looking at the Michellin Sport A/S tires and can't decide between getting a 225/50 or 235/45.
Does anybody have any experience with this tire? What do you recommend?
I have read some other posts and seen a big debate, but that was mostly with the Toyo tires... I haven't heard anything about the Michellins.
I'm a little concerned that the 235s will rub, but I don't have any other issues (except that it may be a little too wide for a 7" rim). What do you think?

In my opinion, a 235/45 set-up on the stock rims is a bit touchy. Yes, it will fit the stock rim and work. Safely is the question. The possibility of the tire breaking from the rims lip under hard cornering is more significant as the CL-S rim is 7 inch and a 235 ratio tire needs (at least) 7.5 inches. If you want to safely run 235s you gotta’ get 8 inch rims or wider.

If you’re staying with the stock rims go with the stock size of 215/50/17 or plus one it @ 225/50/17.

I have 235/45s with zero probs on my '03 stock rims. There are many others on the board with the same setup w/o problems.

I'm running Michilen Pilot Sport A/S 225/50ZR17s on stock '03 CLS 6sp rims. They are a little taller (26.1" outer dia.) than the stock tires (25.5" outer dia.). The speedo is only about 2% off, so 70 MPH is really ~71.6 MPH. I've also got CT springs and sway and haven't had any rubbing problems. Also, according to Michilen, these 225/50s require a 6.0-8.0 in. rim and the 235/45s a 7.5-9.0 in. rim.

Here's the data sheet for the Michilen Pilot Sport A/S tires: http://michelinman.com/assets/pdfs/doc_pilotsportas.pdf

Thanks guys, I appreciate the responses. I'm going to stick with the stock rims for now. From what I've been able to determine, nobody has had much problem with a 225 setup except for speed calibration being a little off. However, it seems like it is more hit or miss with the 235. I kind of like to have the 235s, but, it seems that there are some people who have problems and others who don't. I can't seem to figure out whether the people that have problems are doing or not doing something that needs to be done in order to avoid those problems. Anyhow, I appreciate the information!

dude... get the 235/45 setup. its the SAME rolling height as stock so your callibration WONT be off, and trust me, you WONT get rubbing. my car was lowered and when i had my stock rims ran that setup and there were ZERO problems. i had 235/45/ZR17 Falken FK-451... focking awesome ass tire... great price. dont go 225/50.... there's NO point in doing that... for that just stick with the stock setup...

just transferred my 235/45/17's from some aftermarket Konig's that were on my Max to the stock '03 rims. a-b-s-o-l-u-t-e-l-y no problems, and this is with a measured 1.75" drop up front -courtesy of Comptech.

Oh, ok, thanks for the re-assurances... I thought that 235s were posing some problems, but, I'll trust that the responses here show otherwise. Anybody have issues with tire pressure? What is the recommended pressure on the 235s?

I have Bridgstones re750 235x45 17 on stock rims,, the car has the comptech springs and sways,,, there has been no problems,,, The max pressure rating is 51 psi (yes 51) I am running 40psi and it seems a lilltle soft so I'm going to watch my wear and mpgs closely,, I might have to go to 45psi for max mpg's,,,

These tires are recommended for 7.5 in min rim,,, we (cl-s) have
a 7in rim,, all engineers give margins on specs ie ussally 7.5 in min is really 7.5 minus 10% to 20% for safety,,, sooooo you are ok with the 7in rim for safety,,,, now if you were on the track and want max performance out of the tire, the wider wheel is the way to go,, but understand this is a max performance condition when you are pushing the car to over 8/10ths of it's max and also your own ability to bring the car to these levels,, I have done some time on the track and some soloII autocross and it takes a lot of practice to bring a car up to these levels, then to know and understand the car is at these levels,, then to actually feel the dif in wheel withs between 7in and 8in ,,, yes some on this board can feel this diff,, but not me... I spend a lot of time sliding sideways and not worried about the wheel widths at that time...but also I'm driving my 1966 mustang,,, maybe I need wider wheels to keep it on the track,, "Do at the track, not on the street"

I've always ran 235/45's on my stock rims.

And, if you want the best, go with the Toyos.

Tire Choice

23/17-45 much closer to stock. Go with that.

Tire Size Comparison

Specification Sidewall Radius Diameter Circumference
215/50-17 4.2in 12.7in 25.5in 80.0in
225/50-17 4.4in 12.9in 25.9in 81.2in
235/45-17 4.2in 12.7in 25.3in 79.6in

Revs/Mile Difference
792 0.0%
780 1.5%
796 -0.5%

235/45-17 with Pro-Kit Drop no camber. The only problem is mild inner wear. Have to get tires rotated every 4-6k mi.

I was reading the manual and it was saying that is you alter the tires size it will also affect our VSA, anyone have any problems with the VSA not liking the new tire size?

I would use the 225/50/17s A significant boost in traction and safe for 7 inch wheels. The 3% boost in speed per speedo reading will probably just make your speedo more accurate. They generally read too fast.
If you are concerned about speedo accuracy, get the yellow box (or another equivelent). Will digitally correct speedometer error with any diameter tire. Great for calibration.
