Is 20w50 oil ok for our cl-s?

Over the weekend I had my first oil change and the speed shop recommended I put 20w50 given the high heat in Houston. So I went ahead and did that.

What do you guys think? I've gotten negative feedback on putting this heavier oil. The net response is that the oil is too heavy for a new car with "tight" tolerances.

Will it damage my engine to keep it in until the next oil change (2500 miles away)?

Thx

I always ran 20W-50 in my motorcycle, but for cars it's only recommended for high-reving engines during very hot times of year. In your case, running 20W-50 should be fine between June and September.

Search on "oil" on this site; wealth of info. personally I use amsoil, can't find any independent test that any 5w30 beats it. also use a high quality filter.

20W-50 shouldn't hurt your engine but it's not the best oil to put in it. The engineers that designed your engine know a lot more about what oil you should use than the guys at the local speed shop. It says to use 5W-30 in the manual and that is what you should use. Unless you drive your car on the race track all day when it's 100°F you don't need 50 weight oil. Mobil 1 5W-30 is good to 475°F.

Really now --- do I need to drain this? I just put this stuff in over the wkend.

Anybody know FOR SURE if 20w50 can damage my engine? Please answer only if you really know what you are talking about.

I know, I know, I should have just followed my gut instinct and stuck to 5w10 or 10w10.

If you're that worried about it, call the dealer or a trusted mechanic in your area. Personally, I don't think you'll have any problems keeping it in (except maybe slow starts in the mornings).
