2003 6mt ... When you skip a gear = bad .. ?

I've been driving stick for almost 8 years now ... never burned up a clutch ... *puffing out chest*

I remember reading somewhere, one time, about if you skip a gear, it messes up the tranny ... I think they said syncros specifically. It was a specific make/model that I read this about in some forum ... I find myself skipping 4th or 5th often ... was curious

Any truth?

I know I know, don't believe everything you read on the internet!

Common sense tells me if your speed is high enough skipping gears has no effect on the car. I skip 4th all the time when accelerating, 3rd pulls me right up to where 5th gear is usually.

Not to worry. No harm at all.

You’ll be fine as long as you don’t skip too far and over-rev on a downshift.
I think we all know how bad that could be.

I’ve gone 1-2-3-4-6 in the past and have gone 6th to 4th if I want to accelerate quickly.

Exactly, Once you get to know the car well enough you will know which gear you can go to with out even thinking about it. Depending on my speed I will drop to 3rd or 4th from 6th all the time on the highway if I want to accelerate fast. Same goes for upshifting. Eventually you will do it with out even thinking twice

I skip more gears than I accellerate through, I go 1,2,6, or 1,3,6 or 1,2,5 depending on if I am in town or on a highway.

I think I find myself going through more gears now than before for some reason. I have down this all 98k miles I've driven on the car, and no problems at all.

The only time skipping gears is a problem is if you decide to shift from 6th to 1st while travelling over 120 mph!

I skip 5th ALOT, since 4th is still not that high of rpms while getting to highway speed, and 6th is strong enough past 50mph to drive normally.

The only time it will wear on the syncros is say if you went from redline in 1st directly to say, 5th. It could do it without any real damage, but if you dont wait for the rpms to fall naturally you are forcing the syncros to match the road speed & engine speed by a pretty large margin. Do this often enough and it will cause premature wear on the syncros.

Joe5.0 - Thanks, good info ... maybe the person who was skipping was over-revving ...

This should not be an issue. I also own a corvette and it automatically forces you to shift from first to fourth when driving slowly. I think they do it for fuel economy .......

Nice, I can't wait to sell my CL for a Z06. The CAGS Skip Shift was indeed implemented to avoid the gas guzzler tax. You know you can disable it, right?

As for skipping gears when upshifting and downshifting, there's no mechanical reason why it would hurt the car, or more precisely the transmission, for as long as you don't ride the clutch. To prevent premature clutch & synchro wear, you should try to blip the throttle on downshifts. On upshifts, it pretty much happens automatically.

1-3-6 and 1-2-6 and 1-2-5

You should replace your tranny before the 100K warranty runs out.

When you misshift you harm sychronizers and then they start to degrade.

I didn't think the 100k warranty applied to the manual, plus I only have 600miles to go before I reach that point and it is working perfectly fine.

Yeah, I think you're right on the warranty thing. I really do hope nothing will go wrong. That shifting pattern just screams abuse. But thats just me.

It's not like I shift so fast that the car is at 6k rpm's as I enter 5th from second or something. We'll see what happens, it's a car, it will only last as long as it is taken care of.
