2001 Owners - Would you trade in your ride for a 6-Speed CL ???

I have been asking myself this question since the day I took delivery.
I know I would take a beating on my car, but I just can’t convince myself to bond with this “SS shifter”.
I really miss the control of a manual in the last few snowstorms I have driven through.

Here are my answers:
2002 model: No way, too early.
2003 model: Maybe, if there were other changes as well such as ground effects or more HP.
2004 model: Probably would do it if I found a private buyer for mine.
2005 model: It’s a gimmie

So what about you guys?
Would you do it or wait for something else to buy?

Shawn S

Nah. When my company goes public in about 2 years my CLS will be my commuting car. The cobra which I will then buy will have the manual transmission. !

I'd be in a manual in a heartbeat. As a matter of fact, I'm having probs with the SS now. The sevice lead asked me if I was in SS most of the time. Dang near all the time. Then he tells me about how the car need to warm-up to use SS effectively. I really wish I had a manual. The only thing that finally sold me on the car was the fact that it had all the features, and the SS would allow me to shift when I wanted. I'd have gone with the MB C class or the BMW 3 series then.

I would never trade in my CL for a new one if it was a manual...

I like the CL as it is, it's a VERY comfortable cruiser with sporting tendancies....I enjoy not having to shift gears while in this car, and when I'm feeling aggressive the SS does me fine, slap it down and go

I had cars with manual for more than 30 years until the CL-S late last year, and still can't quite get used to the automatic. So I'd trade right now if the cost weren't huge -- but in a year or two, my answer might be different.

i wouldn't...if i were to get a stick...i'm pretty sure it would never be the cl-s...too big and too heavy...i personally think i'f ur gonna buy a car w/ stick, it should be small and nimble or at least a truly dedicated sports car...

Absolutely. In half a heartbeat!
Every single auto I've owned had been a manual so I thought hey, try something different. Wrong! Why, because control is what is needed on such a heavy crusier such as the CL and the brakes need help! A manual is way easier and faster than that gimmicky SS and it would help control both getting up to speed and back down from speed.

I would not. Not even if I got a great deal. My commute is only 2.6 miles one way and I still wouldn't do it!! I will own a manual tranny car again someday, but never ever ever as my daily driver.

Nope, I bought this car for it's engine and 5 speed auto. When I want to shift I take out my 4 speed 1966 gt mustang. After a couple of hours of that you want to get back into the CL-S.

I wouldn't trade it in, just add to the collection when I buy my next car in about 5 years or so. I will keep my CL-S for a daily driver and get a manual sports car for weekends and just cruisin'

But that is in the future...for now, and always, I like my CL-S the way it is.

I have given up on manuals for my main car. Until I can get an 2003 M3 (with electronic shift/F1 shifter), forget about it. After driving my Bimmer in a few SigAlerts with my clutch foot planted on the floor (or going up-and-down, up-and-down), I will never go with a manual for the "main" car.

The CL-S with its dual mode will have to do for now. (Acura and other makers will put in fully electronic manuals soon...)

I would also get a 427/289/or other version of a Cobra (perhaps an original -- oh, one day). I kind of like the ERA Cobras with the independent rear end and inboard brakes. Picture of a lucky guy:

I was actually thinking about a new user name of EvilTwin with a interlaced gif of Jeckle, Hyde and the CLS. I figured I would be mistaken for a drunken flamer!

Eric, check out www.superformance.com. Reproductions but repros which you can get serviced. I would never get an original. Sure I could afford it ( ) but I'd be afraid to drive it.

I would only trade it in if/when they came out with all wheel drive. I would still go with the stickomatic. Too much daily driving in SD traffic for me.

Of course! The manumatic option is nice, but quite frankly, to compete with BMW, Acura needs to start throwing in some sticks.

Tell the truth guys, if you really wanted a manual you would have bought a BMW, right? BMWs are sportier, but with sportier comes a hefty price tag. An auto is perfect for this car, if it was REALLY meant to be a racecar...would it weigh 3500+lbs? Take it for what it is...a luxury car with enough sport to make BMWs and muscle cars think twice.

That's cool. Mine was a 65 convertible with a 302 (wrong engine) and 4 speed toploader. Rallypac, console, black on black on black. It was my only car and I drove this after college - as the primary car it was pretty dumb so sold it and got an '84 GT. I'd love to have a nice clean 289 3 speed to work on. My cobra will be a reproduction and maybe I'll buy new - I've got a Superformance dealer in the next town over!

another vote for "HELL YES"!!!!
acura would have to work on the brakes and suspension tho (wider wheels and sportier springs would due nicely) i think "as is" the car is just too dangerous for a 6-speed--at least the way i would drive it!!

Nope..............gotten spoiled by the auto since nearly every car I've owned has been a stick. Suits this car's character which is boulevard cruiser with sporty intentions.

Thanks for all the responses so far.

The results as of right now are the reverse of what I had expected.

15 – Would keep their car and the Sport-Shift
8 – Would trade for a manual

I wonder if offered a SWAP for no cost if the numbers would be any different.

No way. I hate manuals. I don't see the point.
With all the advances in automotive technology, I think we will see a manumatic. I don't mean a sportsshift like the CL S has, but I mean a manual transmission, simply controlled by a computer. Maybe even a mode button. If you want to race, switch it to race mode, and the computer will shift the transmission at redline. Normal driving it can shift at maybs 50% below redline or something.
We already have the technology.
In those touring races I see on Speedvision, those guys aren't using a normal automaticn transmission. It look like a Sportshift, but isn't.. They don't have a clutch.
If they built a transmission like that, I'm willing to bet it would win against a normal manual. Think about it. The computer can engage/disengege the clutch faster than any human. They wouldn't use it in racing if it was crap.

LuckyCL,

When they can build an Auto transmission that…………….

Shifts as well as I do
Can predict the road ahead for down-shifts
Can predict the road ahead for up-shifts
Knows when I want to race
Knows when I want to get good MPG
Knows when there is snow or ice on the road
Knows when the light ahead just turned yellow

I will buy one and be happy.

For now I am happy with the car, but it will always be missing something to make it complete.

Shawn S,

I agree with you whole heartedly. Nothing beats a manual in that regard.

I would not trade my auto for a manual. I'm too lazy to do that manual thing anymore.

Money aside, I'd get the stick in a second. I never felt driving a stick in traffic was that bad. Maybe its because I learned to drive in a stick. Its not like Honda clutches take much force to operate. I also learned to minimize the amount of clutching in heavy traffic. I like to *control* the machines I operate, not try to deal with some artificial intelligence that does its own thing. The slushbox and lockup torque converter adds "play" between the engine and wheels that is unsettling to me.

It is a matter of personal opinion because I am sure there are some people who would want the looks of a CL or TL with the honda engine attached to a manual. However, the CL and TL are not racecars. They are luxury cars that just happen to be able to haul ass when needed to do so. I personally would not want a stick. If I wanted a stick with a fast honda I would get an S2000.

Try the clutch with a gimp left knee. Then see how you feel about the manual when you are screaming in pain. Yep, the manuals are fun, and if your really good you should even be able to shift without the clutch (while moving). Just can't get around pushing that clutch when its time to move again in a freeway traffic jam. (I must be getting too old, 'cause I said the same thing you did once.)

Oops, I've got to get my walker....
