2001 CL-s VS. Mustang GT

I was going down the highway as i hear a rather loud mustang , i notice the GT badge and realizing it probably has flow masters 40 series or so.. I pass him and slow down in front of him , he flashes his lights i pull aside and let him start ( were rolling at about 60) he guns it i follow behind he slightly pulled away but it was about even the entire time. I thought i would have taken a GT although im not sure what was under his hood im sure of nothing significant. Im running stock with AEM cold air intake. ( with aem tru-power pulleys on the way).. Did he probably have other mods i was unaware of or is this typical? thanks---MB

What year GT? 96-98 or 99+?

If you only have an intake i'll assume it was just the 96-98 model. Get some headers and you'll come out on top.

Also don't expect any gains from the AEM pulleys as they're all for show. Its the UR Crank pulley that will show some results.

get headers, i got my AW headers and will be putting them in on fri (tomorrow)

AEM tru power pulleys = for show only.

UR pulleys will give you gains but there have been some controversy about premature bearing wear.

2nd gen? Like 71-74?

Was it the newer style with the sharp lines or the previous bodystyle with rounded corners etc?

99+ GT 5 speed's trap at 98mph, so they will definitely beat a stock or even a modded CL-S. I ran my dad's bone stock 00 GT 5 speed to a 14.2 @ 98mph. There are %at CL-S' that have I/H/E that dont run that, let alone keep up with a GT that is modded.

a gt should pull slightly but not by much, ive raced a few. The only thing that gets them that leap in the beggining is the insane torque.

300lb ft is not "insane tq". A Viper has insane torque, GT's just have a useable power curve.

YOu have that you ran a 14.5 in bone stock CLs 6 spd. They say headers cut about a .5 second off your quarter mile umm would,nt that put the CLs under the 14.2 you ran in your fathers GT.Even if the gain was a liitle less? That would be a lightly modded cl only headers. Seems that by the numbers you should deffinatly be able to over take a least some GT's. I know I have. When you see two hundred a day they kind of run together as for the difference in years. I see holes

of course, exhaust doesn't do much for a cl-s.

exhaust nets like 2-3whp at max...its pointless. Our car already has a free-flowing exhaust, so if you get aftermarket exhaust, it's mainly for the look and sound.

Take these into consideration.

Was it rounded mostly?? -94-98
Boxy looking ?? - 99+

Regardless of which year, you should have whopped a pre 99. I would somewhat agree with being even with him, but I would think you'd pull ahead. GT's only get at it in the begining, if you started at around 60 mph, I think you should have taken him, but not significantly. Your redline is high, and Ford's top end is garbage (unless its mod'd to hell of course). If it was a stock GT 99 / manual Vs. a CL-S with AEM intake (stick? auto? tiptronic? <--sorry i don't know what acura calls it) , I would have bet my $$ on you (assuming you rolled from a 60mph (which would be mabye 3rd gear?) Anyways, good race.

A roll from 60mph would put him in 2nd gear around 5500 RPM. Right where our cars scream

I'd like to race a modded CLS from a roll. My 'stang only has gears & exhaust as power mods. I trap the same as alot of auto's with headers, so it wont be a even race even for a modded CL-S.

ill take you up on that offer, but my car is a modded tls! j/k
GT's are very fast even stock. dont let that 260 stock fool you. they have a good powerband, and a redline of 6k rpms.
for an auto, you need at least i/h to keep up, a pulley would edge the gt out.
for a stick, you need headers imo to keep up, an intake would give the edge to the cls. any more than that and its not a fair race for a stock gt. also, the outcome will change from a stop. from a roll, what i have said so far should be about right.
gt's are really quick even in auto form! however, the auto will be destroyed at 90 mph and above, as 4th is really weak in that car. this is based on my experience with the GS4 and 2 auto stangs, 02 and 03. after 90, i would pull away like they are stopped.

I'd say an AMG SL65 has insane torque, like 700ft lbs

My mustang is making 250wtq at 2000rpm, which makes for great driveability. I can pass with authority on the expressway without downshifting, and I dont have to shift higher than 3k rpm and still have very usuable power. My Mustang makes more tq at 1700rpm than my CL-S6 does at the flywheel at its peak. They both make about the same hp at the wheels, but look at the track times for each.

I;m trying to make it sound like my Mustang is even that fast, cuz its not really. If it had the top end charge like my CL-S without losing any low ned tq it would easily run 12's.

A new GT 99-04 runs at 260 hp and will more than likely not be alot faster than a CL or TL type S. If the Mustang driver has a stick and can drive He should win. It is only made to haul *&@. No luxury or nothing and less weight due to nice things like sunroofs

dude youre all over the racing section gloating about your ford pride. i know you have a ford and obviously love them and defend them thats fine... but dont come in here dissin all the stories etc... just not cool. our cars also have 260hp at the crank.. yes we're prob a bit heavier and yes we have fwd so youll get us on the launch but other than that its not some big difference. i mean cmon man dont be ignorant. you can find lots of stories of ppl hangin with and barely beatin gt's, especially 6speeds (stock for stock). our cls' arent sports cars like stangs so give it a rest tryin to argue against every other thread on here. not tryin to be an ass but youre seriously makin waves for no reason

True. I've seen a stock current gen stang run a 14 flat so they are generally faster than the manny CLSs. I'd say they're closer than most people think but I've read about a few stock stangs running high 13s. Now the autos are pretty quick but a tad slower than the auto CLSs. I think from a roll a auto CLS/TLS can hang with a stick gt for a little but should still lose some ground.
