Hey all,
I've been looking at CL-S's lately for a new Daily Driver. I like how they look and the performance aspect, but the tranny problem is quite scarey. If I buy the car from a non-Acura dealer, will my tranny be covered by Acura? I've always been an American car guy, but this Acura will/could be my first import.
Wel any buying advice or useful info would be appreciated.
Thanks
Dan

you will be covered under the 7 year 100k tranny warranty no matter what. And these cars are actually built in the USA (other than the POS tranny - built in Japan).

not true. i bought a rebuilt and is NOT covered under warranty, but they do have a AcuraCare warranty available if you are interested.

LOOK, guys whos are new here.. its very simple, this has been talked about aleast 2 or 3 times a week, if you use the SEARCH function, you get 2-3years of this topic... the good bad and the ugly, the search is your friend, use it and you will find everything you need to know.

Only thing rebuilt is the Transmission if replaced, AS for the CL thats not rebuilt lol

I don't know what all this "rebuilt" stuff is about. But the OG CL trannys have an extended 100k 7yr warranty on them, no question.

If it’s a rebuilt car with a “refurbished” title the 100K extended Tranny warranty is invalid.
An example would be a theft recovery of a totaled car that someone rebuilt.
Acura won’t TOUCH that car.

But I don’t think that’s what the original poster is talking about here.
Just because it’s not purchased from an Acura dealer doesn’t mean it’s rebuilt.
A title search will answer this question and the dealer would legally have to tell you the car’s history.

I have 03 CL-S and I absolutely love it.. not a great car to hold its value but as a daily driving car, you'll love it.. so I guess you already know about the performance aspect, but make sure to include its comfort and luxury when you consider buying one of these... yeah tranny can be a problem but it is my understanding that all 5AT are covered under Acura Warranty... the way I figured, I got about 16K on my car right now and since the warranty is good for 7yrs/100K, I have about 84K more miles to drive without having to worry about spending any money out of my pocket to get my powertrain fixed if there will be any problem.... 84K = roughly little more than 5 years left.. (assuming i would do about 16k to 17k every year) now.. that's plenty for me.. i'm not a type to keep a car for more than half a decade... since u r looking at 01 CL-S just do your calculation and see if it's worth it for you when ur warranty runs out... As for me... I'm more than happy with my car... best of luck to you on finding what u r looking for!

Well I am new to Acura CL's but not to cars in general. I am looking for a nice comfortable, reliable quick daily driver. I have a mustang that is my toy car. I understand that just because it is not bought at an Acura dealership doesn't mean its refurbished or rebuilt in any way. My question was regarding the tranny situation should and most likely will go if I purchase a CL. Buying the car used at say a used car dealership or private owner, I was concerned with warranty issues with the car buying it with some miles.

Unless a car is salvage title, all 01-02 Acura CLs received an across the board 100,000 mile extended warranty coverage on the automatic transmissions from Honda due to the problems they were having.
take the VIN # to an Acura dealer (or call the 1-800 Acura #) and make sure the car is still under the regular and the transmission warranties. it probably is covered.
PS-I'd spend a little more and get the 03 6 speed, or at least drive one before you commit to the automatic CLS, but I'm biased.

Thanks 123456SPEED and others that helped clear up the tranny question. I mean I would love a 6-speed, but I'm not looking to go crazy with the CL (at first at least) , thats what the mustang is for .
But I am looking for a reliable, fast sporty car that can last me 5 years or so until I buy a house and then I can get some of my dream cars. So the money I save now is good because I will end up selling the Acura down the line.
I am just concerned with the reliability and wear factor on the car for potential long time use.

It depends on your budget. I would look for one with low miles with the original tranny. I think what andre is saying is that if you purchase one with a re-built tranny, the dealer may not honor the warranty on it. I had one person tell me that when the tranny is replaced it is only warrantied for 12 months/12000 miles, and everyone else told me it's up to 100K, including my service rep.

If I had to do it all over again, I would still get this car. Every car has faults. But it is still a solid car. Get it from a dealer, make sure you get a good history and purchase an extended warranty if it will make you feel better. In fact negotiate one when you are at the dealer.

And, welcome to the forum. Enjoy.

I agree.. there are times I regret buying the car (mainly when I come on here and read about the tranny issues), but for me.. I gotta admit, it's been rock solid except for my throttle body which was replaced under warranty. I've had it for 9 months or so.

That was my reasoning too Ravi, I got the extended 7year/100k bumper to bumper warranty for peace of mind. I know this car will be covered under warranty until I got over 100k or Dec. 2008. I hope to have my car paid off by then.

Every car does have it's problems. My old 92 Legend had recurring issues with it overheating, which prompted me to get the CLS. But I actually thought about selling the CLS and getting a nice low mileage 95 Legend GS. Ahhh, I'm just not ready to take the depreciation hit with this much warranty left on the CLS.
