20+ Horsepower From A Tweak?
20+ Horsepower From A Tweak?
Tomorrow (Thursday 10-17), I'm supposed to bring my wife's TL in to the dealer for an oil change. I am told by the sales manager that some mechanic who works for them can tweak the "S" engine to get 20+ more horsepower. He did it on a salesman's TL. The salesman swears, whatever he did gave him a "big kick in the ass." I promise that I will find out about this and report in as soon as I get back. Bullshit...who knows? Check back to this thread tomorrow.
Sounds like complete and utter bullshit. Make sure you run a before and after dyno before the guy touches your car. Unless he's not charging you... then it won't matter.
Either way I wouldn't let them touch the car w/o knowing what they're doing.....

who knows we at this forum expect to be let down so thats why we are very skeptic, ask him what the hell he plans to do, hopefully it will help but with as many engine gurus as we have, i'm sure if there was something that could easily add 20 hp we would have found it.

u think he could of done something similar to a racing chip? he probably got into the computer, and messed with the vtec timing, the revlimiter, and some of that shit. I doubt he really got 20hp outa it.
I think if this in fact is true
sounds like he messed w/ the ecu and advanced timing alittle bit...messing w/the ECu has shown 2 give good gains on the J-block engines but is usually very complicated and then of course theres that slight minor issue of tranny

Maybe this is like this Mystical RES, no one truly knows if it exists, yet its being produced and used on some random CLS out there taht only gets driven at night with the lights off so no one sees. So he's basically richening A/F ratio. dude, let us know if it works.

When I bring my car in for an oil change in 2 weeks I'll tell him to do it...and I'll report in. The good news is that I can always reset it back to the original setting if it doesn't work out.
Open up the fuel injection, what the...
There is nothing to open up on the fuel injection system. You have a fuel pump which feeds fuel through a fuel line into a fuel pressure regulator. This also has an outlets to the fuel rail and the return line. There are no restrictions and if there were then you would have problems.
Our cars run rich normally, why would you want to make it worse by adding more fuel. Even then the ECU will trim it out. We really want to go a bit leaner at WOT as the revs climb. The statements made by that sales person are out of pure ignorance.
As for a technician messing with the ECU, if he could do it he shouldn't be wrenching at a dealer. He would be an electronics expert. So we can throw this concept out the window.
There are ways to mechanically alter the timing by fooling the ECU but it wouldn't give you these types of gains.

BTW, I once heard that if you turn the inginition to the on position without starting the car, tap the gas three time, then the brake three times and then start the car you will have an additional 15 HP.
This is true, no lie as someone told me this.

As I said, the sales manager didn't know what he was talking about. I think he might have known the theory behind it, but not the mechanics. However, I promise I'll get to the bottom of this and report back when I know more.

Actually it was a joke and no you won't. The injectors won't fire unless CPK pulses are detected. With the engine still, there are no pulses and no fuel will be flowing.

But nowadays there are several checks in the system to determine what to do. Since we have port injection the computer needs to know when to fire. This is where the CPK signal comes in (Crank Position Sensor), the ECU can determine where it is at in the engine cycle and fire the injector accordingly.
That's right...the old fart capitol of the world. This is where 2 of the 3 monkeys came from: No see'um and No hear'um. Also, watch out for the stroker joker as he drives thru Delray Beach with his oxygen tank strapped to himself. So many handicapped tags are issued here...they are commonly call "crip tics." I could go on forever.

Don't look at it that way, you are just experienced in other ways!! But yes, running a carb is certainly a different story and even the mechanical fuel injection would allow flooding. I also beleive that some early electronic fuel injection would fire the injector with the engine off.

You know those old 1000 and 1100 CFM carbs use to help give you great torque. Can you believe I once had a buick that was rated at 325 bhp and 445 ft lbs of torque at 2800 rpms. I could spin those wheels with positraction for 100+ ft. Went thru 2 rear ends though. 1963 Buick Wildcat with dynoflow transmission. Pimp car (I can attest).

That was a beautiful time before the mid 70's when things really changed. If only the suspension and tire compound technology existed back them, there would have been some serious screamers. One car that always caught my attention, although I was only one or two when released was the (I believe) '72 Buick GSX. A moderate priced car capable of turning high 12's from the show room!!!
My parents were never big into cars when I was growing up. However, I have heard of stories where my mother took her brothers car and just let loose on a 3 Speed manual Hemi equipped vehicle and spun it all the way down the street even with her mother in he car.
Now I have my father-in-law around who has a beautiful '35 Chevy Hot-Rod (Turquoise with Pink Panther in the back) but with only a small block Chevy. We have been discussing for years on a mutual project car. As expected he wants to do a carb'd big block engine and I want to do a smaller displacement DFI turbo engine.
