yes but it was a strip on the bottom of the car that when the oil pan or transmission pan came in direct contact with it it would send out 10,000 volts of electricity to fry the engine control unit.

It was worse than a prototype I wasn't even close to marketable and had many flaws.

a device such as the one in 2 fast 2 furious would need a powerfull amplfication unit (transformer) that would convert low voltage DC voltage into high voltage DC or AC (most likely DC)

A projectile unit such as in the movie is currently not feasable at lest on a mass produces scale.

I would not expect these to come to fruitation at least for a couple decades and then I would envision a homing becon or a some kind of spear gun with a winch that would shoot into the trunk or tailgate and then winch the patrol car closer to the target vehicle and then the patrol vehicle would slam on the brakes to slow the target vehicle to a very slow speed so the patrol cars could box the target vehicle in and make an arrest.

All very interesting stuff. I would like to hear more feedback on what you guys think.

every hear of an EMP? I've seen something on TLC where they had that, but they didn't shoot it. It was on like a skateboard and shot out from the front of the police car.

EMPs affect every electronic device in it's range, so it would take out the cop car too.

well it depends on how strong the made the emp. It could be jsut strong enough to take out the target. But i think emp is pushing it a little too far.

In the book "The Cars of the Fast and the Furious" (pg123-124) the weapon is simply referred to as an "electronic dart" and is not a real life weapon. The electric charge was all done by special effects.

Not if the EMP was aimed and capable of directional control. YOu watched the Matrick too many times...

Besides, you can sheild the vehicle so it isn't effected.

I saw this TV special on TLC as well. And tehy said the EMPs were controllable in a small area and in a specific direction. I think it was a special on police chases.

I imagine there is a better way:

A Wireless Interface to a Federal memdate version of OBD-X will bring the car to complete stop "safely". All what has to be done: Point the Radar Gun-like Trap Gun, Establish a link to the traget car OBD-X, comfirm identity of the target on the Trap Gun, Activate "Force Complete Stop".

If this is done "right" There is no need for Hi Speed chase and so many victims/damages can be saved.

EMP would be omni-directional. Not feasible as a transmitted signal, unless you were at a last resort.

In my 16 years of analyzing EM signals, I have yet to see an emission that couldn't be detected in every direction. Though they are measurably less in amplitude on the back and sides of a reflector.
