18x8 with 40 or 45 offset will look better

along with 225/40/18 tires on a CLS

what are your thoughtS?

go with the 45, you will rub on a 40

so 45 pulls the wheels towards the car more i assume?

What? a 40 is less sidewall than a 45.

42 is the lowest Offset that you can go...

+42 is the minimum you can go. Higher would be better if you're lowering.
