160mph!

On a trip back from Vegas I had a chance to open the ol' CL up....wow..I did not think it was possible. I was following a 2005 Mercedes-Benz SL-Class SL500 Roadster 5.0L V8, 24 valve, 302@5600hp. We both got on it the Mercedes pulled away till about 120mph I caught up to it at 140mph and passed at 150mph and stayed on it till 160mph! WOW! I assume the Merc must have a a speed limiter or something. either way it was a great run.
Can't wait to supercharge!

Well seeing as how thats pretty impossible I say good job.

FWIW The CL has a speed limiter at 148mph (or so ive read numerous times), and you'd need alot more hp than what you have now to hit 160mph. BTW auto or 6 speed?

The only way an SL would be behind an N/A CL is if this was what's going on:

Yeah, then the SL would pretty much be behind the CL every time.

maybe billy was dreaming lol

The 4th and 5th gears are both capped at 147 mph due to the speed limiter.

Wow what a The limiter is set at 147 mph. 160 mph is impossible to achieve in a CL-S. Not to mention a SL500 would murder you at speeds above 110 if he was actually trying.

-1 Negative rep.

correction, the SL500 is limited to 155

and there is no way you held up w/ it. Those things fly once they start rolling. My dad had an S500 and that thing on the freeway would almost stick w/ C5's for a little while. From a dig they are pigs though.

He obviously didn't make it to 160 nor did he beat that MB , especially in 4th or 5th gear, but I do have to say that I was going downhill and I hit 155mph once in my CL-S.

K, i got my first gen's speedo needle to point straight down through the p in mph and thats way the hell past 140, (yes it was downhill) for all of you near sac it was comming down 1-80 from auburn on that long, straight, slightly downhill run. So, i personally believe that he could hit 160 as long as it was not flat....about beating the sl500.....i'll keep those comments to myself,.

He did say that the he thought the SL500 was speed limited and thats why he was able to pass the SL500 ... Maybe instead of being speed limited, the SL500 was driver limited? I don't know a lot of people who like to drive their car above 100mph for long periods of time (whether it be nerves, or worried about being arrested...)

You guys are all reading the story as if he said he destroyed the SL500. He clearly says that the SL500 walked away from him until about 120mph ... and then he caught up at 140mph. My guess is that after 120mph the SL500 had enough and shutdown and billy here did what some of us might refer to as a 'ricer fly-by'. No offense billy, not trying to be rude here, just trying back ya up since a lot of people here seem to think the whole story is BS.

I dunno about the 160mph thing though ... but it could have easily been a mistake. Our speedometers are not even close to 100% accurate.

You make a good point. At 5% error his actual speed would be 152, at 10% error his speed would be 145. That I would have no trouble believing.

After hitting 160, he then went on to 210mph in an effort to help the Police catch this guy. Check this out...
