And here I was just saying that Acura doesn't offer anthing in their lineup that interests me.
I'm interested now
I wonder how long it'll take for the technology to trickle down the rest of the lineup (and if a AWD coupe is in Acura's future).

the downside will be price...an AWD system with add close to $2000 to a car. I fear the TL wont' be the value contender anymore with AWD. I would also want a bump in power to go with the drivetrain losses of AWD. All in all, and AWD 6 speed TL would be sweet. I don't care as long as they offer an AWD option.
The car I'm really liking right now (after seeing it and sitting in it yesterday) is the Volvo S60R and V70R. The interior is not very Volvo to me and the power and versatility and price are all pretty nice.

where did you hear this?

Depends on how good the AWD option is. Infiniti's AWD derives from the GTR and is mostly a RWD until traction is lost. Then the torque is shifted to a 50:50 ratio. In snow, there is an option to keep it 50:50 permanently. I believe the MDX currently has the opposite with a FWD bias but can anyone confirm?

Yep, that's the VTM-4 system that they use on the MDX and CRV. It's FWD with the ability to shift torque in realtime as needed.Originally posted by EZZ

I do not believe this is going to be an OPTION....the car will just come with the system.......

This is good new. Hopefully RWD will be soon to follow. That new CL is looking more and more promising.

Well, it's not going to be RWD. It will be an AWD system of some sort (VTM-4 or IMA). But it will cost Acura far too much to switch platforms to RWD for no reason. It just isn't going to happen.Originally posted by Scooter

Good news the RL needed it. Maybe Honda is finally catching on.

I heard the 04 rl was going to be a hybrid with 2 engines, one eletric and one gas, and was going to have 420 hp. From an acura rep about a year ago. But I know what is nonsense.
Anyway as long as they change the body style, the rl will sell.
And it is good news for the new cl

That's basically the IMA system. I can easily see something like this happening with the next generation RL. Maybe the 3.2 from the TL and maybe 100hp worth of electric motors running the back tires. So we could possibly see a 370 AWD RL soon. Originally posted by 2001CL

The latest, reliably sourced, rumors, called for the Hybrid RL wearing a 3 liter torquey engine making 200HP and 2 electic engines making 80HP each. Total= 360HP in aggregate fashion (although I understand that when dealing with Hybrids, it's not as simple to add electric motor power + IC engine power to get the total -- the total is always less - dont understand it yet though).

you are correct because the hybrid tech is used when the car starts to accelerate.....when the car is using the most trq....when it needs more trq....but at the sametime burning more fuel to get that trq. SO.....the hybrid motor would provide the TRQ on the lowend and then when ever the AWD implementation had it kick in.

But could we not have a situation where both engines (electric and IC) would work at their PEAK HP levels?Originally posted by Zapata

I'm not a car expert, but if we go with the "mods don't add up" thought, it would be the same kindof thing. If the RL Gas Motor makes 200hp @ 6500rpms, and the Electric motors make 80hp @ 3000rpms, then they wouldn't add up to make a max of 360 ... If the electric motor makes 50hp @ 6500rpms, then most likely the max hp would be 300hp (200hp + 50hp + 50hp @ 6500rpms). This is just a complete guess at numbers for an example ... but thats why I'd imagine they wouldn't add up... Just like an intake + headers don't equal 40 more hp

Just assuming AWD wouldn't be a cheap/free option. It isn't on any other car. where did you hear this?
So with a hybrid engine AWD, I am wondering how power transfer works. What types of differentials need to be used if there are 2 motors?
As far as tq splitting goes rear wheel biased isn't so bad. As long as 60% or more power can get up front, it will be fine in the snow. I wish the Audi system had more rear wheel bias.

Yeah, manufacturers should give out a curve of the total HP at all points on the RPM band under WOT.Originally posted by LiQiCE

4WD would be a great move, but RWD will lose more sales then gain.
