03 SVT Cobra.....engine issues?

I remember reading some were having engine issues and production needed to be stopped. Anybody shine some light on the issue?

I heard something about people were cracking drive shafts off the line from soo much torque...I saw it happen at our local track.

There was some talk of engine problems, but it was really hush hush. This was back in November, and I never read any real evidence of problems.

i heard its just a batch, like 850 reported cars or somethin had engine problems but all the bugs are worked out. And the driveshaft issue is like the new GM 10 bolts on the camaro/trans ams. If you put slicks on an SS and dump it...use your imagination

Problem with the half shafts is you get the noobs trying to drag race, do a clutch dump and severe wheel hop, shafts just can't take it. If you put on the necessary hardware to control wheel hop they will last. There's a guy out there running 23lbs boost on a KB charged Cobra, stock bottom end, getting 10.06 in the 1/4, something like 730 + hp AT THE WHEELS. That's hauling buns. They built that engine hell for stout.

They did have a problem with the coolant system, and production had to be halted for a couple of weeks. It's supposedly fixed now.

The first batch of the Cobras had problems varying from dead pistons to complete engine failures. But that was just the first ones. They are alright now.

Ford sucks, anyway. I'm more partial to GM.

That's why I bought an Acura. Wanna buy a Ford Tbird real cheap

In Ford's defense, 390hp is quite a bit for a $30 something thousand dollar car. The ZO6 vette is 405hp, but that starts at $52k. If you want more hp then that you'll have to spend the big $$ and buy a Porsche twin-turbo (like topgaytrader)

If you're a real torque-aholic, the Cobra SVT is a good bang for the buck IMHO.

Damn... I hate when somebody points out the facts!

In a recent mag, the '03 SVT Cobra competes neck to neck with the Z06 Vette in handling, 1/4 mile times, skidpads, etc. Both cars performed identical (except the Mustang was like 1/2 the cost).

But, I'm still bitter over my P.O.S. '00 GT 5 speed I unloaded to by our '01 CL-S.......

Oh, let me see, Ford has a section dedicated to blown engines in a car that will mop our ass all over the road and you guys label that car a POS and make comments like 'what did you expect from Ford'.

Now if I recall, we have a section on this site dedicated to........oh what was that, folked up trannys.

Someone please explain to me why our cars aren't a POS as well.

Sometimes I think you guys need a reality check.

Fellas, I think he was kidding about the "blown engine forum". I've never seen a forum for that reason at any of the Stang forums.

Sometimes I think you guys need a reality check.

Personally, I tagged mine as a POS, 'cause:

1) New tranny (5 speed, TSB where shifter pulls R and 1 in at the same time)
2) New clutch assembly (release bearing seized up)
3) Cooling fan not working
4) Brake lights not working
5) New tranny leaking fluid
6) Car randomly stalled when coasting to a light. No power steering, no power brakes.

And numerous other things that I don't want to bore you with. The thing that pissed me off, is if you talk to the service manager, he admitted that they swapped a bunch of tranny's, a bunch of clutch assemblies (he claimed it was common!), and the random stalling issue "I don't want to lie to you. It's very unlikely that something like that will ever be found." WTF!?!?!?!

Oh yeh, that was in the first 7500 miles, and then I traded the f'ker.

And the things I loved the most:
1) Shitty seats that hurt my ass when driving for a long time.
2) Annoying f'in squeak in the blower motor (same squeak as my friend's '95 -- a 5 year older car!!!!)
3) Vinyl back seats when you buy the leather package.
4) Flashing all over the map pockets with sharp edges.

Raw power is a minor benefit. Sure it can kick our ass, but it's still oozing that Ford build and design quality.

I couldn't handle spending more time walking than driving!

Ahhhh... that vent made me feel better.

Wires, you had an '03 Cobra?

The '03 is a totally different animal than earlier versions.

No, '00 GT.

It does look inviting though. Especially when they under-rate the ponies so much. Shit, people are dyno'in the 390 at the ground!

I'm just saying, there was a lot of physical flaws with my '00, a bunch the same as my friends '95.

Bottom line, 'Stang was meant to go fast and handle. Period. Forget about build quality, for get about perks, forget about anything else.

Too bad. I'd spend an extra couple of grand on a new one if I knew that extra couple of grand would fix all the build quality, and interior fitment issues..... :P

Ford's quality sucks even worse than that of GM.

Kind of weird, coming from a GM fan, but it is true.
