'01 CL 107,000 with tranny problem -- warranty?
I have a CL-S with 107,000 that has performed well except the brakes. Now, I am experiencing the same tranny problems that others had: slipping and sticking around 2nd and 3rd.
Does anyone have any experience or advise getting warranty coverage past 100K? I have one dealer say that Acura will cover the parts ($3K) but I have to pay labor ($540). I would much prefer to pay nothing!
Can you imagine paying $3500?? I would sell the car if I could!

Where is my super sauce?
Call another dealer.
Call the regional service advisor.
Call Acura/Honda of America.
They have a known problem that you are dealing with. Hopefully, they'll treat you as warranty based on TIME and not MILEAGE.
If I still had to pay for labor and not parts, I'd probably take that offer -- that, or sell the car (which will be hard if the transmission is slipping).
I would also see what warranty I could get with the replacement transmission. I'd hate to see you in the same position in another year when you are trying to get transmission #3.
Another thought, not necessarily one that I'd jump too -- how much would Aamco get for one of their transmissions with lifetime warranty? My understanding is that they rebuild the transmission and then re-rebuild or replace it if it fails again, for the life of your car. If you're looking at keeping your car for many more years, I'd consider the long-term costs on your transmission.

If another dealer won't do the job under warrenty go for the $540,,, that's a good deal,,, I just replaced a trans on my 97 dodge minivan after 90k miles,, it cost me $1800,,only comes with a 1 year 12k mile warrenty,, $400 more would get me a 2 year,,24k mile warrenty,, pay the $540,,, you got 107k out of it,, that's good news to me,,, although I hope mine goes out at 99kmiles,,,

I'd call around, including regional rep. 107K is VERY close to 100K, even closer when you figure the odo is off app. 2-3%, and
you actually noticed it starting to slip about 4-5K miles ago.. YMMV

last time I spoke with the acura rep about trannies they told me if it breaks because of the known clutch pack issue they will fix it even if it exceeds the 100,000 miles. So call them and raise hell, but be polite . And dont take no for an answer. They must fix this considering how many trannies have failed.

Take comfort you guys...I'm at 156,000 miles and STILL on tranny numero uno. Honda fluid changed every 20K miles at home and that's it. What I'm thinking is that when my '00 TL was built (Nov. of '99) they were using a transmission that held up...and then something changed at some point later. Granted I'm on the highway alot but my customers are in the towns and cities so it sees varied use. I also downshift to 4th and 3rd quite a bit. I can hear a very faint gear whine all the time, but it hasn't changed thru the years much at all. I've even run it down the quarter mile ten times and countless full throttle launches from redlights. I count myself as lucky, and hope you guys can share that too. When it does die I be the first to tell you all!

IMO, the 4-3 downshifts and 10-quarter mile runs are not transmission killers (well, at least it you got a tranny that has good bearings, good Q/A, and good ATF flow).
Some last a long time and some don't!
There are some driving patterns that would not be associated with ABUSE that can cause an early (pre - 2003) tranny to explode. In addition, some of the early trannies were just build with really poor quality control and would fail in a few thousand miles (it wouldn't have mattered how the car was driven).
Acura has documented "good will" replacements of transmissions, and depending on circumstances (i.e. phase of moon and/or day of week) they might replace a tranny with more than 100K miles. It depends and couldn't hurt to ask.
