It's cause of where you live and what you are wearing. What's the humidity today 3-4%?? Static electricity is a bitch in AZ!

My brother's Civic Si and a friend's Accord do the same thing. I was concerned about this when buying the CL-S. Hasn't happened to me yet (knock on wood {hits head repeatedly} )

I read that somewhere if you can find a piece of grounded metal in the car to touch before you touch the ground that will solve the problem. My legend does it to when the humidity is low (not often in Oklahoma).

LOL

Given that you live in a dry climate. I wouldn't say it's unusual. It would be more troublesome if you were in Seattle in February.

It is more common in cars with cloth interiors. Most of the time the likely cause is a bad ground. Check the ground straps in the car. Make sure they are tight.

About the only other method for combating this is auxiliary ground straps. You know, the ones you see hanging from the bumper of a 67 Impala, or an early 70's Olds Ninety-Eight.

My MDX and TL-S both create a huge amount of interior static electricity. It actually causes dust to stick to the doors, dash, and console.

While the low humidity reason does make sense... that's not happened with any of the four cars I've owned since I've lived in AZ...

It was just a thought.

I had a Cherokee that would shock the hell out of me every time I got out and went to close the door. The Cl-S? Nothing? Same location, same climate.

IMHO I would check the grounds. Maybe other members will tell us if they are experiencing the same phenomenon. Or maybe Wayne or Jens can give their input.

The stock tires have a ton of Silica in them -- they are great insulators. The early MXVs on Civics were such good electrical insulators, that toll booth operators were getting shocked big time. The problem was so bad, that the toll booth people were going to refuse to touch the Hondas. They finally changed the tire composition and added more carbon to the tires to increase the conductance.

Looks like they need to add some more carbon.

And, yes, you can get one of those Ham radio ground straps to drag on the pavement -- great for light shows from behind

Use to happen with me a lot in my last Integra in Minnesota. So I got use to just putting my leg out of the door first, touching the frame with the back of my leg (calf) and getting shocked there. Then when I got out, no more shock to the hand or arm. It was either a small shock on the back of my leg (which was tolerable) or after all that movement and sliding, a big shock on the hand.

Here's what I think is happeneing.

When your in the car, your body technically is not earth-ground(Touching the dirt, pavement) When you step out of the car, you are now entering a different sense of ground/surface which the atoms charged differently(this is where climate comes into play) then from the surfaces your car are. PLUS PLUS you are not touching ANYTHING(nor is your body) until your feet are touching the pavement. what does this mean? You body stored up some static electricity and needs to eascape, which it does once your feet and hands are completing the LINK for electricty to flow? (God This was hard to me to put in words)

Now, this is all opinion and what I think.

Perfectly normal in low humidity areas. Happens here in the winter. Worse if you are wearing any clothing not from natural fiber (ie cotton). It is a result of the static buildup on the vehicle not being bled off through the humidity in the air. Easiest way to avoid it- hold your key in your hand, making sure to be touching the metal part, then just touch the metal of the key to the door opening- this will equalize the charge through the metal of the key and not your body. Won't hurt you or the key

It's your shoes bro. I have a pair of Kenneth Cole's and everytime I wear them I get shocked. I also have a pair of Rockports that do the same thing too. It seems that with dress shoes it happens more often than with sneakers. Also the optimum risk for static electicity is when the weather is cool and dry, you are in AZ so I know it aint cool there but it is extremely dry so Check it out.
