** Heads Up in NJ.... Theft Ring **

Hey all,

A buddy of mine who has a Subaru (and is also on this board.. screen name Stripe) has been telling me about a bunch of thefts over the last 12-18 months in NJ. It's been happening over time... but the last few months have seen A LOT of action and cars disappearing. A lot of WRX/STi's on the NASOIC board have been stolen, and apparently they're targeting Audi's heavily now. There's been so much theft that a lot of the Subaru guys are getting Fuel or Ignition Cutoffs installed on top of alarms.

Just be careful out there and be aware of your surroundings, b/c with the popularity of the CL's and TL's.... Acura's may be next.

Here's a quote from one of the Audiworld posts:
"The group of friends that I hang out with, 11 out of 12 S4's have been stolen in the past 18 months"

sorry... I just thought it was kinda funny... why steal a CL/TL when you can steal an S4 It's like if you were to be able to pick out a free car, would you pikc a CL/TL? I know I sure as hell wouldn't.

They're stealing dozens of WRX's.. which are $22k cars... so it doesn't really seem to matter to them much.... they're getting what's hot.... and Acura's are always popular.

Yeah, but there are more CL/TLs on the road than S4s. Therefore, demand for these parts should be greater. (Couple that with the fact that some CL/TL parts are compatable with the 98-02 Accord V6 and you have even greater black market demand.)

I think either the Camry or the Civic is the #1 stolen car. Its not necessarily about the cost of the car -- its apparently what the chop shops can get for parts.

JB--thanks for the heads up. My wife drives the turbo'd Subaru Forester. Unfortunately, the factory alarms don't come with an immobilizer or fuel cut.
We try to avoid NJ as it is -- just another reason, I suppose.

good heads up JB....the Audi thefts have been going on for years. Another thing to note is that in Boston, a lot of friends are having their HIDs stolen. On the streets of Cambridge, Allston, brighton and out of public parking garages as well all over Boston. They basically mess up the hood and rip out the housings to get the bulbs/ballasts. Be careful out there, I don't know of many Acura HID thefts locally, but still not a reason to make it easy for theifs. I've been getting into the habit of parking where my housings are very visible. Like not against walls or places where thieves can hide when they operate. I usually park nose out. Be careful out there folks.

They don't steal stuff to keep for themsleves and they pretty much don't get much for each car they bring in. Some cars bring in more $$ because of the price of parts or demand. Tat is Y toyota camarys and accords get stolen often.

Yeah, I know that theft always occurs and this is nothing new.. it's just that all of a sudden and lately there's been a flurry of activity that seems to be focused in New Jersey.... so just be careful.
