Yoko AVS ES100?

Anyone have any ideas of throwing on a set of Yokohama AVSs to replace the stock Michelins that are OEM? Of course these will be used just in the summer with another set of wheels, probably the optional 5-star wheels but I'm not sure how they'll look on my Pearl White TSX?

I have a customer that put a set of them on his TSX, but he moved to the size of 225/45/17 instead of the OEM size of 215/50/17. I haven't seen the Silver Stars on a whilte car, and I don't think it would look to hot IMHO. As for the tires, he says he loves them. I also have a friend that has them on his S2000 that sings their praises too. Not to mention that the price on them is great. They're about $107 a tire on www.tirerack.com

After much research I have come to the conclusion that the Yokohama AVS ES100, Pirelli PZero Nero and Toyo Proxes T1s are the best summer tires. Get one of those 3 and you'll be set.

Thanks for the advice. After everything I've read I think the AVSs are the way to go. Now to figure out on a good wheel....

I've heard that unless you're on brand new asphalt, these tires (at least the Yoks) are DEAFENING?

What about tread wear?

Wet traction?

Rolling resistance (i.e. mileage)?

Tirerack has a fairly good survey list and nearly everyone raves about them. Out of a possible 10 (and this is from almost 300 surveys submitted) the Yokos scored an 8.2 for Wet Traction, an 8.8 for Dry Traction and Noise Comfort was an 8.0...not too bad. Tread Wear rolled in with a 7.8 which is respectable since it's such a soft compound. I'll research a little more but I have a feeling I'll be coming back to these.

If the tirerack reports are that good, that's some of the best reviews you can get. That's also why I plugged their link on here. They did some of the research for you basically. They're great tires with great grip that will cost much less than replacing the OEM ones that have no grip. Even if the stock ones are considered all-seasons, they still could be better.

Thumbs up

I got ES100s for my 1.6EL this spring. They are great. Noise is not an issue; I live in Quebec where there is probably less than five mile of decent ashfalt in the whole province. If they were noisy on rough roads I would know. The traction in wet & dry is great. As far a wear, I woudn't be able to tell you for a while. Very happy with the price and performance compared to the original Michelin XGT4. About 30% less $.

So how are your Yokos in colder weather (i.e. during fall when it gets to around 40F?

This seems like a not-bad place to ask:

Is there anything at all to be said in defense of the STOCK TIRES? Other than you don't have to pay extra....

Don't know about the cold (got them this spring, remember) and don't intend to find out. I have dedicated winter tires, a must on this part of the continent

I hear the are not for riding in the smow.

Other than the price to replace the stockers, they just don't really have any grip. They start to squeal a little too early for me, and don't bite into the turns like I expect them to. They're made to last 30k miles and have good all-season traction, not take care of me for 20k miles and grip nicely.

Replacing the stockers sounds like an improvement. I drive in hot weather all year. My only concern is rain.

Stock tires on cars are the cheapest tires. They slap em on thousands of cars and don't want to pay much for them.

AVS ES 100s, I love them, highly recommeneded. They only get loud at the end of tire life (like all other tires).

I've used Yoko ES100 before, they're not loud (until you wear them all the way down), rides fairly good, and perform really good in wet. But depends on how hard you drive yours, if you're thinking of putting your car in AutoX or track, Yoko just don't have the ultimate grip. By comparison, my friend's Bridgestone Potenza RE950, despite it's All-season design, had better traction in dry. The yokos also does not improve your steering response. If you drive really hard, try something else.

Actually, the stock tires are much more expensive to replace than going with say a set of ES100s. The Yokos are about $109/tire and the Michelins are $176/tire. You can pay less and get more grip by going to the Yokos. OEM tires are usually this way. THe stock ones on the TSX are intended for long life and good all-season grip rather than being summer tires. That's part of why the price is so high. The Michelins are going to last about 30k miles and the Yokos will go about 20k.

AVS and Noise

I have installed 2 sets of ES100's with good success:

1971 MGB GT: Great for Autocross

1994 GSR: Great everyday tires

However, we just took an Audi S4 in on trade. It had these tires and they howled like crazy. We are currently trying to get them replaced under warranty.

BTW:

We put a set of Silverstars on a TLS Pearl White. It didn't look good against the tan interior.

We've tried out the Silver Stars on a couple of colors too. Seems that they only look really good on the Satin Silver and Arctic Blue.

On a side note: Eric? As in the SM at Plano? There are others that post on forums...

Has anyone tried the AVS db's? If noise is an issue these are supposed to be tolerable. If they are from the AVS family, the grip should be there too.

I think this was partly in reply to my Q of whether there's anything to be said for the stock tires, other than that you don't have to pay extra for them.

I guess sicklex is right, but this surprises me greatly, and I wonder if the manufacturers are making a big mistake on this, at least on cars where buyers are looking for nuances of performance, handling, ride etc. I mean, they know better than I do, but ..... wouldn't it be worth putting a little extra investment into the tires (it wouldn't be much, in the whole scheme of things), since this is something easy that would enhance the whole impression of the car?

These tires (es100) are simply awesome tires compared to the stockers. Grip like hell, hold well in rain, dont wear out too fast and are cheap as hell to buy!! They have a cool looking tread pattern too

I highly recommend them

Another side-affect of using cheap OEM tires is that they give a negative impression of the tire manufacturer. A friend-of-a-friend works for Goodyear and it really bugs him that most manufacturers use the cheapest (lower quality) Goodyear tires. So when it comes time to replace them, customers don't want Goodyears again and the better tires are a hard sell.

So it's even more bizarre that the stock Michelins are so expensive. I think fitting the car with all-season tires is mostly an exercise in legal CYA for Acura. Perhaps there's not much available in the required size?

At any rate, the Yokos seem to be good enough that I'll give them a whirl when the stockers are worn out, maybe before. I'm fairly certain I'll be buying real winters this year anyway (probably Michelin Alpins or Blizzaks), so the loss of all-season capability (sic) is a non-issue.

The ES100s look good, except their outrageous weight. The Toyo T1-S weigh like 4 lbs less per corner in most of the sizes that fit the TSX. Then again, the T1-S cost much more and have less stiff sidewalls, so there is always a compromise.

I'm leaning towards the Toyo Proxes 4. Lighter than the ES100 and the stock Michelins, none of the problems summer tires have (poor treadwear, flat spotting, poor cold asphalt grip, etc), and they are pretty cheap. They won't grip as well as the ES100, but I have heard they still outgrip many dedicated summer tires despite having a M+S rating.

The best tires you can get are the bridgestone potenzas re750 they have a phenominal review and drive amazing. Tire rack rated it higher then some wheels twice its price. i got 225/45/17.

Tire Rack doesn't carry Toyo so that review may be slightly biased.

they're ok tires, but performance wise they are lacking compared to deticated performance summer tires.

The stock tires are fine if don't plan on stopping, cornering or accelerating.

Seriously I am extremely disappointed in the Michelins. I have 20,000km on my car and they squeal like a stuck pig even when I'm not booting around. Winter driving is not acceptable. I couldn't drive my car for a week last winter because I had no traction.

They will be replaced by some Toyo Garit HT this winter and a set of T1-S for the summer.
