Winter Wheels

Yeah, I know, it's July...but this winter will be my first with my 07 TSX 6MT Navi and I need to get some winter wheels. I've always used Nokian/Hakka[...] tires with great results, so for rubber I'm going to go with the RSI . However, I've no idea on rims. I don't want (or need) anything flashy, just something that I won't feel too bad if they get salted up. What's the best way to go? Just find some TSX or Accord take-off's on Craig's List or here? Next, I'll want to keep the TPMS functionality so I'll need an additional set of sensors. Where's the best place to get them, price-wise?

Thanks

Pete

pete... are you getting specific winter wheels or just tires for all season driving?

i live in madison... lots of snow and have an 07 mt navi as well. my plan is to just put some really good all seasons on mine... probably toyo proxes 4 and go up in tire width from 215 to 225 for a bit more traction. hopefully vsa will be helping out a lot too.

i am selling my stock rims if you are interested. $600+shipping... just let me know if you are interested.

tirerack or somewhere like that usually sells rims for about 200-500... assuming they arent ugly as shit.

as for tpms... go to your dealer and order them if you cant find them online, my dealership hooked me up by transplanting them into my new rims free of charge cuz i had them swap my old rims and tires with my new ones for like $100... just tires wanted $175.

Narrower is actually better for traction.

yep narrow is better. Think snow shoes. They're wide so they stay on top of the snow. You don't want that, narrow goes down the ground better for traction on the road not spinning on the snow. I use the stock wheels with some yoko all season tires. Southern wisconsin hasn't gotten any real snow in a few years now so snow tires would only be usefull for a few times a year.

i live in canada with lots of snow. i run 205/60/16 on steel wheels, its ugly but it does its job, and i don't cry when the salt is used. running narrower tires help. 16" help too, less rim more rubber at freezing temps. as for tpms, find rims that at compatible

Tire Rack has specific packages for most cars (including the TSX) or you could design your own (which I've done a number of times). They have some fairly inexpensive (relatively speaking) alloy wheels that will survive the rigors of winter with only some regular cleaning. I've had good luck with Sport Edition wheels and they're available in a few different designs for less than $100 a piece. I'm going to disagree with the all season advice. If all seasons will do the trick for you, you might as well stick with the crappy Michelins. It seems that if you're going to go through the expense and bother, you should do it right and get winter tires. There are allot out to there to choose from, so decide what you're willing spend, do some research, and go from there. One bit of advice: price isn't the best way to decide what's best. There are a number of reasonably priced snow tires available that excel in the variety of conditions that you encounter during winter driving.

hmmmm maybe i shouldn't sell my stock rims and use them as winter wheels and just buy some winter tires for them... get an extra set of tpms sensors for them too.

All Seasons should be truthfully labelled as "Three Seasons". Spring, Summer, Fall. NOT WINTER.

I've been to Wisconsin many times -- I'd never go there in the winter without actual WINTER tires.

I use Accord steelies (16") with halfway decent Michelin winter tires in a 215/60/16 (I wanted 205 but they didn't have any available at the time). Never been stuck, and traction on ice is very good as well.

All seasons use a rubber compound that WILL freeze up rock solid in winter. Real winter tires, the ones with the mountain+snowflake symbol, use a special rubber compound that doesn't freeze up nearly as early, keeping the tires soft and able to contact the road better.

I made it through last winter on balding stock michelin's in the snow that we had , depending on how bad our winters get, all seasons can get you through, I would look to Blizzaks or something comparable for "winter" tires. Good luck...also we need to get some of the WI tsxers together for a meet and greet....

Putting together a set of wheels & tires for the snow & cold. I usually put them on right at Thanksgiving and swap them out with my regular wheels around the beginning of April.

i dunno im still torn...
if i dont sell my original rims/tires then i cant get new tires at all but i have 2 sets of rims.
if i sell my rims/tires then i only have 1 set of rims but money for 2 new sets of tires
if i sell just my rims i have enough for 1 new set of tires but then i have 1 set of rims and 1 set of tires that i dont like.
if i just buy the all season set i want AND the winter tires then i have a set of rims for each but i'll be out about $1000 and have a 3rd set sitting around collecting dust that i dont want or need.

this is so confusing.
