Will tire spray cleaner damage my rims?

I just bought some new tsx a-spec rims and a buddy of mine told me that tire cleaners/shiners can damage rims. My tsx a-specs I believe have like a dark pewter finish to them...
My question is what is the best way to clean my tires and rims?
And do tire cleaners damage all type of rims or just alloy/pewter?
Thanks in advance for all the help. I am a newbie at all this kind of stuff...

It is my understanding that the wheels on the TSX are clear-coated. In other words, they are painted just like the body of the car. Therefore, do not apply any cleaners made for cleaning metal (some of them actually have acid in them) and use only cleaners that could be used on your paint with no harm.

The wheels are apparently clear-coated to make them easier to keep clean (thanks, Acura) and thus far, regular car wash with a soft rag and brush has done the job for me.

This is an area that can be confusing when you walk into an auto parts store and find two dozen bottles claiming to be wheel cleaners. In my current policy to stay away from all wheel cleaners and use only the solutions that would be used for washing the body with the TSX. Materials made to clean metal are much too harsh for paint and could do serious damage.

I refer to the standard wheels. The A-Spec wheels might be different. And, someone correct me if I am wrong.

Well, I mis-read you question. You said "tire cleaners/shiners" and I read "wheel cleaners/shiners".

But, the answer is the same. Some tire cleaners/shiners can harm paint and therefore can harm any clear-coat on the wheels. You will want to be sure that you select a rubber/vinyl treatment that will not harm paint such as Meguiar's Vinyl and Rubber Cleaner/Conditioner or Armor All. If you have any doubt, call the manufacturer. The number for Meguiar is 800-347-5700.

I use Westleys Bleach White to scrub my tires, and I am sure it oversprays on the wheels and paint. As long as the surface is wet, and it gets washed off, you should have nothing to worry about.

I've always used Stoner Tire Shine because they have a great spray nossle that has minimal if no overspray and the product does not drip. Plus its cheap, about $2 at autozone
