current tires are 215/50/17 can i change them to 225/55/17 ?

When the width increases, the profile needs to decrease. You want to be running 45s, not 55s. The 55s are going to be too tall and you will end up with alignment problems that will be more expensive to correct than buying the properly sized tires.
