Exclamation Tire Mismatch Issue

I did my research and decided to go for a set of Continental ExtremeContact DWS to replace my Bridgestone Potenza RE960AS tires (on 2006 OEM wheels).
After they put them on, I noticed that they put on 215/45/17 instead of the 215/50/17s required. They said they'd put the right ones on this week, but now the Continentals are out of stock until May.
Question is this:
Do i live with the 3.3% difference in the speedometer/odometer for 3-4 years, or do I pick another tire?

I'd go back to the Bridgestones but this winter they really disappointed me in the snow- as bad as the OEM hockey pucks the car came with...

Can you go back to the Bridgestones until the Continentals come in? I have the RE960AS on my 06 and I love them compared to OEM. I don't get any snow in Albuquerque so snow/ice traction wasn't a problem for me.

The Continental ExtremeContact DWS are fast moving up my list as an replacement tire for the TSX. I might even try them on the wife's RDX at the end the summer.

I had an 97 Honda accord and sears did the same thing and placed the wrong tire size on the car. The speedo was over about 2 mph and my gas mileage stayed about the same. I kept those tire on the car for about 5 years.

3.3% over 4 years can add up to a lot. I would wait until the correct size comes in or shop on-line for tire retailers that might have the correct size(discount tire, tire rack).

If it was me, I'd live with the new tires. Sure your speedo will be off, but not excessively.

I'd bring it back and have them replace them with any equal or better quality tires at their expense. They screwed up and will have to fix their screw up.
I would also file a complaint with the local BBB. Mismatching all 4 tires is nothing short of stupidity.

I'm inclined to agree. If you think about it, this is a huge screw up on the part of...... whatever kind of car place this is (kind of like having your house painted the wrong color "sorry, we didn't notice it was beige not white") . I'd bet they installed what they did because they didn't have the right ones on hand (and wouldn't till May). Aside from just looking small (215/45 is a pretty small tire), you'd just do better all the way around with the proper size tire.

In fact, at over 3% too small, you could have problems with VSA and ABS systems, which would turn into a safety issue. If you got in a wreck because of a VSA or braking issue, they'd be liable.

Check the load index on those undersized tires... looks like it is 91. Spec is 95 for our cars. Not only are they too small but they are not rated high enough for the weight of your car.

Point out the liability issue to the tire dealer and demand they find the correct size immediately.

Actually, the weight index on the OE Michelins is 93 for the 04 through 08 models, though Honda did insist on installing an XL model. Any tire with a 91 weight rating (which is 1356 lbs. by the way), will still allow for plenty of reserve capacity even for that weight index rating (TSX GCWR is 4300 lbs., 1356x4= 5424 lbs.). But..... I will admit that the maximum weight rating awarded to a tire is achieved at it's maximum tire pressure which will be higher (usually allot higher) than the recommended pressures for most (if not all) cars. All that said, I think this weight index thing is an issue that's really overblown. With very few exceptions (very few!) modern tires fail because of road hazard damage, they're/it's defective, they're run at high speed for a long time while grossly underflated and/or just plain worn out. And.... if you guys that run winter tires (including me) and have moved to a more efficient (in the snow) 16" package, you'll most likely find (if you don't know already) that you're running tires with a load index below that of the OE tire.

I did a little more research on the XL versus standard load rating, and found some interesting data. The following applies to two tires of the same size. Up to the standard load tire's maximum pressure (35 psi), the load rating at a given pressure for both tires is the same. It's only at higher pressures (36-41 psi, the XL tire's maximum pressure) that the XL tire enjoys a higher weight rating. So..... since the TSX's recommended tire pressures are 32F 30R, it would seem to me that the XL tire is of no benefit. Go figure.

Why couldn't they give you a different, better set of tires in the proper size all together? I work in retail and if we don't have the model the customer wants, we sell them the next highest model for the same price. That's just good buisness.

How did the tire dealer resolve this problem?
