Thinking about selling my Volks, Actually Selling (post #45)

Hey guys, I was thinking about selling my Volks and getting something in the 17" size range.

This is what the current wheels look like on my car:

They are 18 X 7.5 w/225 40 18 size tires.

I'm just thinking about possibly going with some 17 X 8 wheels that are more performance-oriented. I dunno, I guess that everytime I'm driving around on these I'm always worried abour curbing, bending them, etc. The size of the wheel + the sidewall of the tire also adds to my worries as well. Note that I came from having TL wheels on my car which made the damn thing feel like a tank.

I'm thinking about getting some Works or Racing Hart wheels, or even possibly a different set of smaller, but wider Volks.

So I guess I'm just checking with you guys to see whether I should or should not sell these. Gimme your feedback!

The wheels 'look' so good in person. But if performance is your priority then I understand. Some lucky person will get them from you.

Heck Joe, I think I need you to possibly hook me up with a new set if I do decide to sell these. So more business for you!

Haha, I'm going to keep them for a little bit (at least until after the New Years Holiday), so CG, you'll get to see them if I'm in town!

Also, no price point yet, but I have 2 people who might be interested in them already.

I love the way they look, and yes they're light, but I'm always worried about curbing them due to the low 40 sidewall. That's why I was thinking about getting 17s. With at least a 235/45 tire, I think I'd feel better doing some of the stuff that I do.

Where are Vwong and JTso when you need them? I want their take on performance wheels and see what they think.

They are nice, but I'm not too into wheels with too much Chrome. Jiggaman, weren't you looking for some Work Emotions before? I think I really like those wheels.

How much do you expect to pay for the volks?

Haha, yes, volks would at least run you in the neighborhood of $1700-$2000+ used w/tires.

I don't know what to say. I was starting to type, but the more I think about it, the more I think I would be typing an essay or something. And it could probably be irrelevant or too overkilled for what you're looking for.

I would suggest you keep your current wheels/tires and try to attend some of those auto-x'es or track events to work on your driving skills first. "Run what you bring" is something that many of us, veteran auto-x'ers, will tell the newbies. Get your driving skills up then upgrade the car later.

Just want to let you know though, the more performance oriented you go, the more non-streetable the car will become. I've gone through this with my Prelude. I started out modding the Prelude to look good. Then I discovered auto-x'es and got hooked. I changed from going after appearance to mainly performance. My car used to ride pretty good, now I'm having a little back pain every time I drive my car. The last 2 weeks, I've been either driving the TSX or my parents' Odyssey and I don't have the back pain anymore.

I'm tempted to offer you a trade for my 18x8 advans. They're pretty light too, I think 16.5 lbs. a piece. I really like them though, so I don't know

Thanks Vincent. I guess I should have probably voiced my concerns a little clearer. I love my Volks and like how they're light weight. The thing is that I'm always concerned with:
  • Bending them
  • Curbing them
  • Afraid of them being stolen

The TSX is back to being my daily driver and with it being as low as it is, along with the somewhat low profile tires, it just concerns me.

Vincent, with your professional experience, do you think 17s would solve any problems? Would the 45 sidewall vs. the current 40 be that big of a difference? I guess I ask this because of the times I've taken the car up to the mountains, everytime I hit a corner hard, it seems like I'm on the near edge of the wheels. Sure I could probably solve this issue by going for a wider tire patch of 235 vs. the current 225 that I'm running, but what do you think? I guess I'm asking from a standpoint of getting ready to get into the track.

Unfortunately, going with 17" doesn't really solve your #3 concern unless you go with some cheap rims that nobody cares about. If you're going with 17x8 Volk, your #3 concern will still exist. I know of at least 2 people who're dying to have a set of 17x8 Volk.....dzuy being one, myself being the other. But we won't steal them, we'll just them if you do go with 17x8 Volk.

With your #1 and #2 concerns, going with 17" may give you a slightly piece of mind that they're less likely to be bent or curbed. Notice I bolded those words? That's because you can still bend or curb them if you're not careful.

Have you seen the picture of the A-Spec TSX in the TOV's test drive? There were several pictures of it taking the corner hard, the tire on the outside front looked like it was about to come off the rim. That car was with the 17" wheels too. Just make sure you have enough pressure in the tires. I ran my car on the 35 series tires on the track once, and I didn't have problem with the wheels touching the ground under hard cornering.

I agree wholeheartedly with your thoughts. I guess I'm in the same boat as you guys with the 17X8 wheels. I just want something with a wider tire patch. Heck, I'd even consider some 8.5 if I could find some ways to make it fit under the car (hmmm... high offset + rolling fenders?)

The third item in the worries (being stolen) was actually a minor concern. The first 2 concerns were my biggest ones. I guess now onto performance. Vincent, do you or does anyone else know where I can get a chart (website?) for the weight of Volks and other lightweight wheels? I want to see how my current Volks compare to other wheels (weight-wise) that I'm considering getting.

i asked about 17 x 8 volk te37's - but the shop i usually go to says they cant get it.

it's not worth buying it just for autox, unless you have money oozing out your pocket.

i'm looking at getting rota's for autox. it's alot cheaper.

there is no way i'm going to risk dinging up my 19 inch volks.

Well your right, I didn't want to spend $500 bones on wheels with curb marks and scratches on them. Especially when I found them NEW online for about $750. And its funny how you probably believed that I only had 500 bones considering I just dropped 25 for my ride. Well either way I would be willing to spend money on used but not f&%!#$ up looking wheels, and if not possible then new ones.

Even though I have 18s I just I'm always concerned with dinging them. Note that 17s would make that big of a difference either.

I looked at rotas, and unfortunately, the widest they go is 7.5 which is just as wide as I've got now. But then again you can go with the actual CP035s, which cost as much as Volks...

I'm thinking possibly about some 17X8 Work Emotion CR Kais. The thing is they're really not "lightweight" wheels coming in at 22lbs each for that size.

Also, for those that are possibly interested in buying these, I already have 2 dibs on them. And I haven't decided if I wanted to sell these just yet. We'll see after the new year. The offset on these Volks is pretty agressive, it's a 40 offset on a 7.5 wide wheel.

Question for you guys, do you think a 17X8.5 wheel with a 50 offset would work? I was looking at the Volk CE28s and they offer a size like that.

Unfortunately, I don't have the url anymore since I hard drive crapped out on me several weeks ago. I lost all the urls that I saved (including a site with wheel weight info).

If you're talking about this site, it's pretty easy to remember, apparently updated 12/16/05:

Thanks Horro! I guess according to the site, my LE37s are pretty damn light. If I went up to a 17X8 wheel it would be heavier if it was the Work CR Emotion Kai, and not much of a difference if I went with Volk CE28s.

I think right now I might be leaning towards not selling the Volks.

I don't think I'll sell them now after doing some research on wheel weights. But I will sell them eventually once I sell the car. Which actually may be 6 months from now if I can save up the money for a used Evo.

Once these go on the market CCC has dibs on them.
