Steel Wheels - Universal vs Knockoff??

does anyone know if there is a big difference? Tirerack sells the universals and claims they'll be fine for our TSX.

I remeber a discussion about this last year when I was looking for steel wheels for my SE-R the conclusion was that you are much better off with OEM steel wheels over universal as just because the bolt pattern fits doesn't mean the hib will.
Are you looking for winter tires ? Let me know as I am trying to get a bunch of people together to buy some from tiretrends. Maybe I should post something for all the Ottawa gang ?

Thanks OTT-TSX, your answer pretty much confirms what the guys at Frisbee tire told me. Although the chances are pretty slim that the universals won't fit adequately - thereby giving the vibration etc.

I'd like to get the knockoff OEMs but here's my dilemna:

I priced a set of Michelin Pilot Alpins from Tirerack in the US. They are currently on sale for $93 USD each. My inlaws are going to be in Myrtle Beach S.C. in November. They are driving down (minivan) and would potentially be able to take delivery while at their condo and transport them back for me - thereby saving duty etc (compared to a straight delivery to my place in Ottawa). So...thanks to a strong CDN $$, I can easliy get the entire wheel/tire package for $800 CDN. Compare this to $1150 CDN plus taxes at Casino Acura!! Unfortunately, TireRack's steel wheels are 'universal' fit, so I'm somewhat hesitant to make the purchase.

Anyway, what sort of cost were you looking at?? And what brand/model of tires? Do you think we can do better in Ottawa??

BTW, Domn suggested that I call some honda dealerships in the area to get prices on the Accord steelies - I was quoted approximately $78 CDN....no thanks.

Hey Crisco I had a set of Pilot Alpines on my SE-R and frankly was not impressed. I am currently looking at the Toyo Garit HT in the 215/50-17 size. I was able to score an extra set of alloy wheels for the car so I am going to use them for winter. I was looking at buying them from either www.tiretrends.com or www.1010tires.com. They are both Canadian companies and I have dealt with 1010 before and the service was excellent. I just ran the price for a set of 16 inch steelies (tiretrends) and Michelin X-ice tires and the cost was $955.81 total shipped with taxes ! I would suggest the Hankook W300 Ice Bear it is a better tire for less money. It is the one my Dad is using for his TL. That would cost you $851.00 total. Since they are in BC you only pay GST. Check it out and if you are interested let me know.

Thanks for the info OTT-TSX. I'll have to weigh my options. Hmmm...that's the first negative report I've seen regarding the Pilots. Don't know anything about Hankook (Tireguy - any info??). I know that the X-Ice is simply the replacement for the Arctic Alpiins (which were not very good). Anyways, I'll do some more research and let you know what I decide to do. Thanks

No problem. I had never heard of Hankook either but from everything I have read and heard they are great value for the money. Plus they are H rated just like the Pilot. I just find for the money you can get a better tire than the Michelin. Check out the site if you still want the Pilots you would be looking at just under $1000.00 for the package (shipped, tax, wheels, balance etc.). Plus a $50.00 gas card from Petro-Can. I'm not trying to keep you away from Tirerack, just trying to give you some Canadian options.

crisco, give your local Honda dealer a call and inquire about 16" steelies for Accords. I picked up last year at my local Honda dealer for $50.00 each. They were OEM's still in Honda packaging. And that price was even better than most knockoff's I could find.
