Rim vs. Steel Wheel (for winter)

Whats the pro's and con's about using a steel wheel over a rim?

I know rims obviously look better.

Steel wheels are cheaper.

Bad thing about steel wheels is that I noticed that all the cars I see with steel sheels today had major rust in the centre hub because it's exposed.

Anything else?

well, steel wheels are still rims. You mean steel wheels vs. alloys.

Alloys generally aren't preferred because they are normally more expensive and will oxidize and look like shit after a few years in the snow and salt. Steelies are cheaper, easily replaceable if they become unserviceable or bent, and really, whose car looks GOOD in the winter, anyhow?

Steelies are generally a bit heavier but nothing major (a few pounds at most on each corner).

There are lots of places to get cheap 16" alloys, but to get an idea of the cost and some options check out the winter packages at tiretrends.com and 1010tires.com. Their alloy rims are only about $60 a corner more than steelies, or about $240 more: that's only $60 extra a year over 4 years, to keep a great looking car looking great.

I have aftermarket wheels for the summer months so I just saved the factory wheels for the winter. Only drawback is that Nokian doesn't make their kickass Hak 2 snow tire for a 17" rim...

I have steelies on and I actually had a co-worker ask if my hubcaps fell off.

So alloys, if their cheap, may be a good idea. But the someone might think your TSX comes with small ugly rims. So I'm with sauce, function over form. And for the love of god Jeff wash that thing

Beautifully. There the exact same offset. My steelies were purchased from Honda for an Accord.

How much are those rims?

$350 for those...what a steal....

In the winter i dont really care how the car looks as itll get dirty anyways and people pay more attention to the traffic and driving.

Got myself a smaller set of honda steelies (16") as well...as for the center hubs rust...doesnt matter....it wont corrode and break apart on you. Unless you are really paranoid thne get some chrome wheel covers

I actually prefer steelies over alloys. In comparison to the Accord rims above.... since there's such a big opening between the spokes, more area is exposed to the salt. I'd rather just have one side exposed to salt, than both sides.

The center hub WILL rust and the little dome cap that covers the locking nut and pin for the driveshaft will either fall off or rust shut. All the Honda/Acura cars with steelies i've seen has rust or the dome cap is missing exposing the locking nut and pin.

I use to work in a garage and we did alot of honda/acura CV boot replacements. It wasn't fun trying to get that dome off when it's rusted and trying to get the locking pin and nut off with rust.

Problem I had with my old car was that I had chunks of ice form on the inside of the rim so when I drove the wheel was way off balance. Least with spoked rims like that i can get the ice off the inside of the rim.

lol, I used steelies on my Accord, never had this issue. I will check my TSX throughout the winter to see if it occurs.

Yeah, that's a pretty shameful pic eh..

Actually it dates back to last year from that dirty TSX thread (which reminds me I should bring that thread back to life for the kicks, heheheh). But my car must not be too far from that today either.

I would like to find some small chrome hubcaps that would cover only the bolts section part of the wheel... nothing like the good ole Gestapo look (and a fashion statement ).

I know I know. Grab one of those honda hubcaps that you have to put on with the lug nuts. It doesn't matter what size the hubcap is and just cut out the centre portion of the hubcap where the bolts are HAHAAHAHAHAHAHA
