Planning to buy a new set of tires

I am planning to replace my current OEM tires with a set of Yokohama AVS ES100. The thing is I am still deciding on the sizes. 215/50/17 or 225/45/17. If I go for the 225/45/17 that will create a larger wheel gap compare to stock, I will lowered the car but not for the time being. I need some advise on choosing the right sizes.

The 225's will be like a half inch smaller than stock.

This thread w/ pics might help, those are 215/45/17, so not as bad as 225/45/17, but you get the idea of what going to a smaller size does.

The 225's will be about 1/2 inch smaller than the 215's but only create an extra 1/4 inch gap between the top of the tire and the wheel well -- right?

Don't know what's wrong with the car in that thread, but it really looks jacked up or on 16". I've got the option wheels from Honda which came with a 225/45ZR17 Michelin Pilot Sport tyre. Wheelgap is not as bad as the blue TSX.

For comparison :

Still need to get it lowered though (next week with the Pro-kit). I personally think that after lowering the 225/45/17 will look better than your stock 215/50/17 size...

No, it would be the full 1\2. The tire is smaller on the ground side and smaller where it meets the fender. The entire diameter is 25.5" vs 25" (according to the tire size calc link).

well I think he means up and down, not in and out spacing. w/ a 1/2" difference, 1/4" is on the top, the other 1/4" is on the bottom. So yes, as far as wheel gap goes, only half of it shows on the top.

Here's my car with 225/45/17 Toyo T1-S. I should mention that according to the T1-S spec sheet, they are a bit taller than the average 225/45/17 tire, but based on my measurements on the TSX I'd have to disagree. I suspect that the specs would match only when using a 7.5" rim (TSX's are 7.0") and at the tire's max cold PSI.

Here's a great tire size calculator to compare multiple tire sizes at once.
