Which offset to go with on a 18 x 7.5 wheel?

OK, so I've decided to place an order for some wheels within the next week or two (so they'll hopefully arrive around March), and I'm also going to go with 18 x 7.5s to save a little weight per wheel.

They come in +45 and +50 offsets, but I can't decide on which one to go with. FYI, I've got Tein SSs and I'm dropped about 1.75-2" (about a 1-1 1/2 finger gap) all around. I want the wheels to be as flush as possible to the fenders without creating any rubbing issues. Would the +45 offset cause any potential headaches, or should I just play it safe and go with the +50 offset?

Also, I want to run 235/40/18 tires on 18 x 7.5 wheels in order to stay as close to stock diameter as possible - anyone with this setup care to share pics?

I'm no expert, but what i am have gathered from reading and asking my own questions, with the 235 tire and the choice of the +45 or +50, def go with the +50. With that drop you "might" run into very little rubbing with the +45. I am waiting for my 18x7.5 with a +50 offset to come in and i was going to go with 225/45 tire just in case.

I'm sure some one here has 18x7.5 +45 and +50 that can give you a better idea but i would go with the +50. It will be pretty close to flush!

I think you can have maximum 225 width tires for 18x7.5 wheels. if you go with 18x8 then you can use 235 tires. I am running 19x8 wheels and went with 235/35/19 tires the chart at tirerack said that .8-9.5 can use 235 anything lower might not fit.
Course i might be wrong if someone here uses 235 width tires with anything lower than .8 wheel depth.

Ok nevermind i just checked the chart 235/40/18 would fit fine with your 18x7.5 wheels. I was wrong hehe.

Either should work but I would personally go with the +50 offset just to play it safe. Im looking for something in between +48-52.

What kind of wheels?

A +45 offset will work fine w/ 225 tires. I have a +42 offset w/ 225 tires, and am dropped about 2 inches. My setup looks dead flush with my fenders. 235 tires might cut it too close, so if you're intent on that section width, I'd go with a +50 offset.

As for the tire sizing, 235 section widths are generally not recommended for wheels less than 8" wide. Can it be mounted? Of course --- others have done it on this board. However, I personally don't recommend it because it creates more sidewall flex, which could potentially lead to tire failre. The more likely scenario is that they won't perform optimally. I assume you want the 235-40-18 spec tire because you'd like to stay as close to the OEM diameter. 225-40-18 is still within acceptable tolerances... by going to the wider rubber, just keep in mind you'll also sacrifice some gas mileage, and will tend to tramline more.

Make sure to snap some pix... whatever you end up choosing

Well, another reason I'd prefer to go with 235 size tires is because I live in the Northeast (read: insane potholes everywhere), and I'd like to have a slightly larger sidewall to protect my wheels. If they were cheap wheels, then I probably wouldn't care if I curbed or bent them as much. But when you spend $500+ per wheel, you'd like to keep them as pristine as possible, especially ones that'd take at least 8 weeks to replace...

So it sounds like most people who've replied are saying I should go with the +50 offset, ehh? That is weird since the majority of the people I've seen running 18 in wheels have a +45 offset...

I run 235/40/18 on 18x7.5 rims with an offset of 42mm on an A-spec suspension living in the cold north. Anyway, thought I would throw my in.

Check out the wheel gallery for what other's are running.

Do you have any pics to share? Some head-on shots would be great, so I would be able to see how flush they are with the fenders...

Also, would any have an estimate of how much more a 8 in wheel would weigh over a 7.5 in wheel?

Here are some pics of mine. Notice the sidewall of my 235/40 tire compared to the 225(?) on the Advan (which are awesome rims BTW).

Yeah, those Advans look sick up close. So they are cast correct?

16.5 pounds is VERY light for a cast wheel

First off, thanks very much for the pics guys...

Kenny's pics are exactly how flush I want my wheels to be. However, Chad's pics are what I want my rubber to be. Kenny's rubber looks a little stretched on an 8 in wheel, so I'm wondering if the 235 rubber will stick out anymore and cause rubbing issues (especially since I'm lowered a little bit more than Kenny).

Kenny, in your opinion, do you think you would run into rubbing issues if you lowered your car a little more?

I have 18x8's running 235's 49et. Im on Tein SS's also, with about a 2 inch drop. On HARD turns my front rubs very little once and a while but not every time.

If I were you I'd go 18x8, the most weight u'd increase is at least a pound or two, like Xizor said. And you can run 235's with no problem.

Good luck!

Hey, I'm not entirely understanding your post. When you mention "49et.", are you referring to running a +49 offset? If so, then I think I might have to go with the 18 x 7.5s in +50 offset, because the 18 x 8 Kreuzers only come in +45 offset.

Also, +1-2 lbs would make a difference to me since I'm looking to minimize any acceleration hindrance running a larger wheel brings.

OK, here's another question...

I'm thinking about getting a BBK later on - what is the minimum offset I'd need to clear a BBK? I'm wondering if +50 offset might be cutting it too close...

Im not sure what the minimum offset is to clear the BBKs but the +50 offset definetly wont clear unless you use spacers according to this thread.

Well, I've resigned to the fact that I'm going with 225 tires when my wheels come in.

However, someone brought up an interesting option - adding a front camber kit. I really would like to go with +45 18x7.5 with 225/40/18s, but in case the wheels do rub with my drop I'm assuming that adding some negative front camber work (already have the rear camber kit).

What would be the pros and cons of adding negative front camber? I've read some people say that for a street car you want to keep camber as close to 0 as possible, but I wouldn't want to do anything more than 1-1.5 degrees. How much extra clearance inside the wheel well would that give me?

With front camber < 1 degree the impact will be fairly minimal. Just rotate your tires and the wear should be acceptable.

Awesome rims Mine in Mercury Silver are on the way, offset is gonna be +42 I believe, which looking at your pictures, they seem to be able to fit well as they are only 8mm (0.31")pushed out.
