early snow questions

Ok, so I'm a few months early, but curious. I need to figure out something for light snow, ice, and unfortunately a few steep hills. I was thinking of getting some artic alpins to mount on my stock alloys.

But I'm also curious about chains, just in case. Of course the problem is alloy damage and general clearance. I've found things like the Weissenfels Newtech 9 and SCC Z-Chain - does anyone have any experience with these or suggestions for other products?

If you need snow tires, I would highly recommend buying spare rims, maybe 16 inch. This will save your stock rims from the salt damage and the scratches from remounting. Much quicker to install your own snow tires and in the process easy to do your own tire rotations. I am considering Pirelli Snowsport 210's, either 20560R16 or 21560R16.

I'm thinking of the Pirelli Snow 210's too. I had the W190's on my last Accord and they were amazing. I had no problem going out to see my clients in the boonies of Parry Sound during last winter.

I agee about getting a spare set of 16" rims, I just got a set of used Accord rims, that had the same offset. The brake caliper clearance did seem a little tight. I'm having my mechanic take a look today to see what he saids.

Edit: Okay the Accord/Odessy thick 5 spoke rims do fit on our TSX.
As for the Pirellis, the W210's and W240's only come in 205/55/R16, adn from what Miata tire calculator gives the following: our speedo will be 5.4% faster.
at speedo reading of 100kph, it will be actually 94.6kph.

Does anyone know if this will cause any harm to our cars?

I know its early as well, but I really want to know what size rims and tires to get for the snows so I can start looking. So you guys are thinking 16/60's. I presume this will match up the same with our 17/50's?? I would also think that 205's may be better for snow, but then again we only seriously need them 4 or 5 times a year. I think dry handling is just as important and I've heard the Artic Alpines can't be beat overall??

I agree the Alpins are great tires in the snow. I believe that I may be happier with the Pirelli's on the TSX as from articles I have read they have an overall handling edge esp. dry pavement. Best to do some reading, Domm including tire rack reviews.

Sorry about hogging this thread but for info on Michelin....load the link above and...
Click on the Pirelli snowsport link.... and then "compare this tire to other winter tires" link near the bottom to see how the Michelin Pilot and Arctic Alpins stack up to the competition according to TireRack

The W210's and W240's don't come in those sizes, do you guys think it'll be okay to go with 55's?
I've also edit my previous post to include my findings from the Miata tire size calculator.

Visorboy check your calcs..using the miati calculator
205 50R 17 +1.5% error
205 55R 16 + 2.3% error
215 55R 16 +0.6% error
going with the 21555R16 may be the best choice providing there is clearance for the discs..if insufficient clearance than they do have the 205 50R 17's available in the 210 snowsport

If the +2.3% error for the 205/55/16 are acceptable in terms of not causing issues for our cars, then I would prefer to go with the W210's otherwise, I might have to shop for another brand. I was told that winter tires should be a bit thinner than stocks. I'm committed to R16's as I've already bought the rims.

These tires are not going to be cheap, unless, there's a tire store that has them kicking around.
I'll check on the prices...

edit: I just checked and last year's prices for the 205/55/16 were $170! We definitely need to get a GTA group buy together in around Oct/Nov for some snows...

Visorboy, I know Bramalea Tire in Brampton usually has some pretty good deals. There number is 905-793-1881. We should probly hold off though on buying as I'm sure snow's will get cheaper closer to the fall.

Agreed, we'll revisit this in the Fall, but a Group Buy for sure.

After having snow tires on my last car, I'm definitely not going to live without them on my TSX.
I'm going to have to start saving some cash now

I use Blizzacks on my GS-R... car handles on rails in the snow with these tires. I also went with another set of rims.

Probably a little early to worry about snow tires. We can start a thread in the early fall. I really want to go with snow tires in this vehicle as I travel up north on weekends and we can all make the most effective use of the traction and stability controls with good winter rubber.
