damn pothole

i was driving home last night and i hit a huge pothole, poorly lit area and the pot hole was about 4 ft wide....

i had to pull over in a bad location (people flying by right next to me at 50+ and not all are prob sober, 2am on a Sat night) so i didnt want to get out and change my tire myself so i called AAA....they tell me i am priority and should be the next available truck with a ETA of a hour...so i think this is fine...well a hour goes by and no truck so i am calling them to see what is goin on and after a few calls i see they are clueless....at that point its been about 1.5 hours, then i notice the acura roadside assistance sticker, so i think what the hell i will try them out...

i call them up and the guy is very helpful and says they will be there within the hour and guess what a tow truck shows up 30 min later...i thought it was AAA and as i was about to call Acura Roadside and cancel they guy says, "oh no, I am not AAA, I am with Acura" my jaw drops...

basically AAA had me waiting there more than 2 hours for no reason...if they told me they were going to be this long at first instead of bsing me i would have called acura earlier...i am going to call them on monday and file a complaint and demand some compensation...we will see how well that goes...

so anyways guys, sorry for the long post but how much do you think the OEM rim will cost...my rear one looked like it had a small bend but that could just be the edge of the lip...the tire looks like it is gonna cost me around 200 bucks...

I guesstimate around $300-400 for a new one.

If you bought the car from a dealership you get the TLC (total luxury care or something) for the first four years of owning it. Not sure after that though. I also have AAA because they do my auto insurance, and they cover other things aside from your car, like if you get thrown in jail they'll post bail for you and stuff.

As for an OEM wheel, ebay is your friend: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...spagename=WDVW $114 for now

You know you can file a report to the city about the pothole. They should be able to refund you for the damage because the city is supposed to maintain their roads and your wheel was OEM too. I think you would have to tell them exactly where the pothole was (a picture would help). You can file this with your insurance I believe.

They should have sent you a credit card looking thing in the mail. Put it in your wallet and call when you need help. If your car breaks down and is repairable under warranty and you are more than 100 miles from home, they will reimburse your expenses up to 1K (I think) while you wait on your car, for hotel, food, etc.
Good Stuff!

I just filed it with my insurance. I destroyed one rim and the other rim was slightly bent, so I filed for two damaged wheels, which cost $700. So they paid for the difference minus the deductible and then paid me the rest later on...there's a catch though. After paying me $200, I waited for a year with no word, so I decided to contact my insurance to see what's up. The person told me that it was filed, but NO ONE ever looked into it. So, I told them that I was very unhappy and if they didn't figure things out within a week, I would be contacting them (keep in mind I was very pissed so I was giving them hell). The guy's superior called me back a few hours later and left a voicemail stating that a check was in the mail for $500 and I should see it in a couple days. I'm pretty sure they were scared that I was going to file a grievance against them or something. All I cared about was getting my money. So it worked out in the end.

btw. Ebay has a few auctions with people selling the OEM wheels for MAD cheap. A whole set for like $400-$500 if I can remember.

A co-worker's Ford blew two tires in a pothole after some rains here in San Diego. He filed a claim with Caltrans and they paid for 2 new tires ($500).

Acutally, what I did If I was ever in this situation was last week when I got my TSX, my dealer offered me a warrenty covering my wheels for tires for just $300.00 and I quickly bought it. He siad it covers everything and I could be poping tires 10 times a day and breaking rims and it wont matter becasue of this warrenty that I bought, so im happy with that... However, if I put larger rims on it, it will expire my warrenty so I am keeping it stock.

So my best comment to you is going to Acura tommorw or something and getting that warrently immedialty! I dont know if you still can considering how long you had the car. You can check.

Anyways I hope this helps.

update

well i took some pics of the damage and pot hole the last night...i plan on putting it together in a nice professional report and filing with the city for reimbursement...as i was about to take a picture another car nailed it and blew his tire but he kept going down the road so i didnt get to talk to them...

i don't think i am going to claim it on my insurance because after my 500 dollar deductable it might not be worth having my premium go up...its already really low for someone my age...

i was able to get 4 brand new rims for a good deal from the dealership since they were the take offs from another TSX which they mounted accessory rims too...i kinda lucked out with that, i worked a good price cause i bargined i would buy all 4 if they would drop the price some more...

but another one of my tires has a small bubble and i am noticing my alignment is slightly off...i will get those take care of in the next week or so, i just have midterms this week....i will complete the total damage cost using MSRP from the dealership for 2 rims, 2 tires, and a alignment...

savage and virtualbong this post's for you:

As a fellow Masshole I am well aware of the joys of negotiating a gauntlet of potholes.

However, this spring I am going to be getting new wheels, and I am kinda torn between 17" and 18" ones. I don't want to drop $1500+ on a new set of 18s only to have them be wrecked every winter by potholes and such. Is the danger that much worse? They'd be summer wheels (save my OEM ones for winter) but still...roadways in this state suck, especially in the cities where we live.

Would 17s be safer? Anybody else chime in too.

yeah we are screwed in boston...we have some nice new roads but at night they are mostly closed for construction and they make us take detours that are suitable for a H1 or land rover defender...

i have a couple suggestions, sometimes brand names are better because i have seen cheaper knock offs get wrecked really easily on from friends cars...you basically get what you pay for when it comes to rims from what i have noticed...

also when you get the rims i recommend you buy 5. Get a 5th one as a backup in case you do damage a rim and then can not find a replacement for it. I know a guy who couldnt find another one of his rims and he was forced to buy a whole new set...

if the place you get the rim from offers some sort of protection warrenty i would consider with our roads...i was considering rims but after this i think i am gonna forget about it...i have 6 good oem right now and 2 bent ones, i might fix the bent ones and use the put winter tires on 4 of them and summer tires on the 4 in the best condition...

I hear ya man! After a brutal winter so far and the snow is clearing off the roads, its uncovering MASSIVE potholes all over the place. Nature can be so ruthless. I'm kinda undecided as well. What really matters is how much rubber you got protecting your rims. If you go with the stock 215/50/17, you should be ok with semi decent rims. If you go 225/45/17, that still should be ok. Just get something that has ###/45+/##. I think anything over 45 should be good or at least make it safer. I'm thinking that a set of 18s is a better choice, but it depends on how my car sits with my body kit and being lowered. You can also just save up for some nice forged rims because they're built stronger and it'll help on potholes. But with any big pothole, you're pretty much screwed. I'm going to wait until late spring to purchase wheels so I'm going to be on a lookout for nice used forged rims. We'll see how things go.

They've had some big time lawsuits for stuff like this too. I don't feel like searching, but I remember some case where a lady was on the side of the road for over 2 hours, some random guy eventually stopped to "help" her, and she was either raped, or kidnapped or something like that.

I have basic AAA. I'm not sure it's actually worth it though. Last time I was towed, the first 3 miles were free, and then it was $3/mile. Only good thing is that you have a number you can call... who knows.

What is up with AAA? I mean, how are they still around with such poor customer service? I've only heard horror stories and no one has said that they came right away. Its always, they came a couple hours later or never did come. I definitely would rely on Acura instead of AAA.

surprisingly they called me back today and i told them this was really inappropriate, i am a AAA plus member and honestly what kind of assistance am i getting here...he said he would definitely look into this matter and get back to me soon for some sort of compensation...they were going to pay for the alternative assistance but i dont have any reciept or anything because it was the free acura roadside service...i made it clear i was on site for about 2.5 hours and they never showed up...i also talked to city hall and they told me to write a formal request for compensation to the city clerk, so hopefully that will work out...

Yep, that's the way to go with it. It might take a long time for the City to pay you back but it is the city's responsibility to maintain the road since its OUR tax money that is funding road maintenance. Let us know how things work out.
