225/45/17 vs. 225/50/17

Does anyone have an opinion which size 225/45/17 or 225/50/17 will work best in the TSX, (as in handling). I am looking specifically at Michelin Pilot Sport AS.

225/45/17 will have better turn in due to the stiffer sidewall but may ride a little harder than the 225/50/17. The 225/45/17 are closer to stock OD too.

i have 225/45/17 with a bridgestone re750 and they are amazing. It feels mile my car is attached to steel rails. I must be pulling around .89 on the skid. They are a reasonalbly inexpensive tire with great performance. Check tire rack the re750 got a superb rating.

Won't having the tire as a 45 series tire instead of the stock 50 overall aspect ratio have an affect on the speedometer? This isn't a plus-one or plus-two tire upgrade.

True, but you also have to compensate for the fact that he's going with a wider contact patch, which in turn affects the aspect ratio.

TRUE

How much do you think this will affect the speedometer reading?

215 x 50% aspect = 107.5 mm
225 x 50% aspect = 112.5 mm
225 x 45% aspect = 101.25 mm

The affect is relatively small. Probably around 1-2% when taking into account the whole height of the wheel and tire package.

First, thanks for all the responses. Second, there is a tire size calculator at http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html, so it is easy to see what different sizes will do to a speedometer. Either of these tires will do fine, less then 2% error on a speedometer.

remember that all tires, even with the same rating(225/45/17) are slightly different sizes. Toyo proxes t1s are known for being extra wide, so when mountedon the tsx wheel they have less of a speedo variation(~1%) as opposed to another 225/45/17. What you can say for sure is that the speedo will be within 1-2 % accuracy.

I have 225/25/17 Pirelli P-Zero Nero M+S tires and they're fine. I was thinking of going to 235/45/17 but didn't want to go too wide. The 235/45/17 size is actually closer to stock diameter, but as others have said, 225/45/17 is within 2% so it's all good.

Not true ....225/50/17 have a OD of 25.85
225/45/17 have a OD of 24.97

The stock 215/50/17 have an OD of 25.46

A High performance summer tire in 225/50-17 will look better (less fender gap than a 225/45-17 ) and WAY outperform the stock tire .

The diff. in the speedometer readings @60 mph with stock size tire vrs 225/50/17 is only 0.91 mph ......or a reading of 60.91 MPH

Here's a great tire size calculator that lets you enter up to 5 tire sizes. I'd recommend just sticking with stock tire size. Both 225/45R17 anbd 225/50R17 will throw out your speedometer and odometer. Changing tire height also affects your gearing ratio and certain vehicle components like ABS.
