16's or 17's for Winter tires
I am going to buy winter tires this year..
can anybody give some advice as to what is "safer"..the 16's or 17's?
If i buy the 16's..i understand that it means better traction to the road..however it also costs more as i would have to purchase 16" rims for the tires.. is that really worth it?
or should i buy 17' inch winter tires and just stick with the rims that I have currently? unless i should buy winter rims for the winter tires too?
any suggestions? or advice?
any reccomendations for good ...not too expensive winter tires? i was thinking of michelins...
thanks

You will likley find the cost of a 17" Snow tire is much more than a 16". You can probably buy 16" steel wheels and snow tires for about the same price as a 17" without rims.
Depends on what you want - i.e. are you OK with black steel wheels, etc

Even if you did lay out a little extra cash for a new set of 16"s, you'll have a complete set that you can easily switch out yourself, as opposed to having to bring your car in twice a year for mounting/balancing, which is around $100 around here. That savings would easily pay for a set of 16" over time........

I happened to see a Bridgestone Blizzak WS-50 (195/55-15, for a Mazda) up against the new Blizzak REV-01 (205/60-16), today. I eyeballed the TREADWIDTH of the "smaller" tire to be about 15mm wider than the REV-01, although the WS-50 treadpattern certainly had a higher void (larger spaces) ratio. The tread, not the width, of the REV-01 just looked a lot skinnier than the tirerack specs (about 7.5mm difference) for these two tires would indicate.

Here is another comparison (Canadian pricing) to help give you an idea of whether you should go 16" or 17"
I picked up a set of used 16" Acura RSX wheels for $290US ($200 + $90 delivery) and had them delivered to a friend in USA who is bringing them up to me.
Here are some comparative prices (Canadian $) for 205/60 -16" Snows
Dunlop Wintersport M3 H rated - $147 each installed + taxes
Kumho KW 17 H rated - $110
Hankook W300 H rated - $127
Michelin Pilot Alpin PA2 H rated - $154
Michelin X-Ice Q rated - $144
17" versions of each of the above will be significantly more

What is the rim size from the RSX (offset etc). I bought Michelin X-Ice 205/60/16 and need to buy a suitable rim. Harder than I thought it would be considering the car's offset.

I am not sure what the exact offset on the 16" RSX rim is. It is a 6.5" wide wheel. There are other member who have used these RSX wheels (and 16" Accord wheels) for winter use, rather than 16" steelies on a TSX.
You can buy go to any wheel specialty shop and buy "cheap" 16" alloys. Good enough for winter use and better looking than black steelies if that is important to you. Check that option out also. Might cost $100-$120 CND each (+ taxes)
