Today, I got a small crack in my wind shield from a rock.
I went to Lebeau (Quebec) to see if they could fix it with injection.

No problem they said. When I picked up the car afterwards, the crack looked identical to when I had brought it in.

The guy at the counter said that the injection just keeps the window from breaking more, and that the crack will always be visible. Since it's my first time having this done, it was my understanding that it would be less visible after the injection.

my question: Can this small crack be fixed without changing the windshield or was the guy telling the truth?

 

how large is the crack? i know they have good success fixing the small chips and the small impact spots. they fill them and you usually can't see them but it is still visible sometimes, but it doesn't look like a crack. more of an imprefection in the glass. if you have a long crack in the glass i'm not sure what they do to fix that. i opted to replace mine, b/c my crack grew one night to around 13" long. i'd think if they can fill the crack it wouldn't be as visible as you are saying it is. i could be wrong though, maybe cracks are more difficult to repair than chips

 

They're like $200 to replace, no? I think that's how much it was to replace the windshield on my dad's '88 Legend this past summer. So it's not a killer.

 

My '99 CL PPG windshield was over $600 installed IIRC.

I replaced 2 windshields within 2 months on my Volvo last summer, one replacement was Indonesian and the second one was South African. They were about $250 installed. The OEM Pilkington glass would have been about $700 installed.

 

its around 400bux for the TSX, I just had mine replaced.

the problem isn't the cost, its the BS and the ability of the glass shop to do the work properly. check out the thread about my current nightmare just trying to get mine replaced.

if at all possible fix it b/c you don't want to have to go through the crap i am. hopefully mine will finally get fixed this week...

 

The garage told me $950 CAD to replace the windshield!!!!

the crack is about half an inch. from the outside, you can hardly see it, however inside, I still see it clearly.

 

I gotta tell you ... the zero deductible on windshields is the best thing you can do. Very cheap in the US through the insurance I have and basically you get free windshield replacement no matter what

Especially good when you are around a lot of construction like I am here

 

My only experience with windshield damage was a small rock chip. I had it filled, which reduced its visibility by about half, but it was still noticable. I'd guess that you won't ever be able to erase the crack completely from view. Maybe the repair shop should have mentioned that before doing the job

Maybe a low/zero deductible is the way to go.

 

Yup.... four new windshields in the last five years here... with no out-of-pocket expense... well worth the premium.

I really need to start driving exclusively on the cars-only side of the turnpike. They've been doing construction on that side, so I've been driving on the cars-and-trucks side, but those big trucks seem to kick up too many rocks. Today a big one hit the windshield and bounced over the roof. It left a little mark - not a crack, I think, more like a scuff mark - I need to take a closer look at it. I guess these things are inevitable, but it's still a sinking feeling whenever it happens.

 

you too o_nate! i just got hit by a rock on rt 80 this morning by a F-150 at my left side. see it's more of a deep chip, like a crater. noticed two of them. hope the epoxy from the auto store works. anyone have good experience with them???
