Weird Navigation problem

I called Acura and three of the closest dealers. I like in Davenport, IA so the nearest dealer is 1.5 hours away. My navigation system is showing my car is driving where I am not. Sometimes it is off by many miles and sometimes it is off a block. Sometimes everything works ok. Neither Acura or a dealer claimed they never heard of the problem and would have to do extensive electrical work. Can anyone please give me some insite into this. Thank you all, and I love the site Also, can you add pictures to pop up on the nav screen>

Thanks everybody

What year is your TSX?

Do this happen everytime or only on occassion? Could be a result of poor satellite coverage in your specific area.

What type of mods do you have on your car? Did you tint your back window? Some people have experienced problems after putting metalic tint on the rear window which caused problems with the navi's reception.

Before you modify anything make sure you find out what is wrong with your Navi. If you modify it before it is fixed the dealer may claim you broke the Navi and won't cover it under warranty for the problem that you are currently having.

Here is a link to a thread that discusses modification of the Navi:

Sounds like either a Navi setting is wrong in the setup screens somewhere (see the Navi thread for details) or some sensor is bad (such as the Yaw or even the GPS antenna).

There is a setting in the Navi used for car shows that shows a Car driving itself along a predetermined route. However, since you say this only happens sporatically I am inclined to believe the bad antenna, bad hardware route.

Good luck.

Thank you all for the feedback, I appreciate it. As a matter of fact, I learn on this site, after looking around, that you can press menu, cancel and map button to bring of the nav menu screen. I have done all self checks and as far as I can tell everything there is OK. I have checked for satelite and when it does this there is only one satelite, would that effect it? Also, I just tinted my windows and had problems before the tint. Also, my girlfriend has a 06 civic with nav. We live together so she leaves and arrives at the same place, she has absolutely no problems with hers. Maybe I will take it to the dealership, I HATE DEALERS!!!! I can just imagine them saying it will be 8 hrs of labor and more to fix it. At least they can give me a loaner for a couple days. To me it sounds like the GPS antenna is not connecting me to the right spot. If I push the current location button in both mine and the g/f cars at the same place and they come up with differnent LAT/LONG numbers, would that mean my GPS sensor is bad?

It's my understanding that for GPS to work, you have to receive at least three GPS satellite signals for "trilateration" to work. When I first got my TSX w/navi, I wanted to know how it worked, so I did some reading. I hit up the "howstuffworks" site and read that as a starter. The link is below for an FYI.

I think since you are saying you only get one satellite signal, I would vote for first looking at the antenna since you say your g/f's navi in her Civic works fine.

Just my two cents...

I tried it and she has 5 to my 0. This is in my driveway. A notorious place where the GPS never works correctly. So where do I go from here, a system reset, or a new gps antenna, or software upgrades? Please let me know where you would start.

Thanks

My nav was not working properly at the disclaimer screen the "ok" wouldn't come up eventually while i drive it would start wkin. Everytime i took it to the dealer there would say all diagnostics are fine and at the time the nav would be wkin fine. I went to get my door actuator fixed at it so happened the nav wasn't wkin. The tech said I need to get my drive replaced. Everything was covered under warranty! The drive is like $600. Where are you located? If ur in NJ go to Open Road in Wayne.

when i was putting tints on my car, i was told that there is a certain type of tint that will interfere with the satelitte reception. don't know if you have tints or not, but if you do, that might do it...

With a lock on only one satellite, the GPS can at best determine how far away you are from that one satellite, which is the surface of sphere with a radius equal to the distance between your car and that satellite. It probably then goes on to make some assumptions, like you're on the earth's surface and not in space. So that narrows it down to a huge circle, and probably a very fuzzy one. After that, it probably does some more guesstimating based on where you were when it last saw three good signals, narrowing the fuzzy circle down to a fuzzy point.

Question is, why are your GPS only finding one satellite (or even none) when your GF's Civic is finding five?

I do have tint on my car and it was doing it before the tint application. I tried to readjust the cars position at a stop light and that worked for a little bit. It is always wrong when I come out of work and I checked and there were no sats when I left work, so it was probably guestimating. When I see how many sats it is connected to, it usually is yellow for one and blue for one or two depending where I am at. It says blue is "Searching". LIke I said, at home there is none, either yellow or blue. I am guessing the gps antenna is not getting good reception. does anyone else think this is true, and if so, how much are those bad boys?

Also, I am in Davenport IA with the nearest dealer 1.5 hrs away, so I am trying to avoid taking it there because of distance and dealer costs. I don't have a warranty anymore b/c I have 60,250 miles.

thanks everyone for your help, your time and effort is much appreciated

Either the antenna is bad, cable to the antenna is loose or your tint for some reason has all of a sudden started affecting reception - especially likely as your girlfriend gets 5 satellites on hers while you only get 1. When I get home from work I can try to look at the service manual and see what it recommends for your situation.

Thanks stevestr for the help. I will look at them and see what they say. I keep trying to see if I can pick up any sats. and I rarely pick up any. I have been doing it in the old ladies car and she always has at least 5 and 2 that are searching.
