Vibration when idling
Vibration when idling
When I start the car, I feel the vibration coming from the engine. I kinda get how it idles at 1.5k to make the car warm-up faster but it also causes vibration imo. Is this normal? It's not very shaky but it's very feelable(lol).
Ive been getting that alot lately. Some times its so bad the stearing wheel shakes up and down.Mostly when its cold but ive also been getting vibration while cruzing at aroung 2000-2500 rpm.Ive had the wheels checked for balance and acura checked for the vibration and they said its normal.
It is normal for all 4 banger cars. Every 4 cylinder car vibrates in cold and harsh weather but, it is has been improved drastically over the old cars due to the engine being mounted on an independent sub frame, which reduces propagation of engine vibration to the body. Nevertheless, It does happen somewhat.
I get it too and it is iritating. It makes the car feel kinda raggedy. I cannot remember if it did the same thing when it was new (I have 36,000 miles), but wonder if the motor mounts need replacing or tightening.

Yea same prob here! Mine is a 2003 TSX.
We got it brand new and it was my wife's daily driver, I've recently just gotten it off her hands after i bought her a new SUV...
Anyway....my vibrations are the same pretty much as most described here....it gets worse in morning sometimes and I can even feel it in the pedals!
It drives ok but at the lights, at a complete standstill with brakes on and gear still in drive, the vibration will come on. Shift it to "N" or reverse and the vibes eases up. I could not remember if it has been doing this since brand new, since it was mainly driven by wife but I do remember driving it on weekends and other instances before, the vibes were not that obvious before.
Seems as though the vibes gets worse as the years and milage pours on!
Brought the car in for 60K svc recently and asked the dealer to check it out...2 days later, svc manager called and said they couldnt find anything. They checked the engine mounts, the transmission..everything looks good. And since nothing looks spoiled....he said the dealership cant do anything to resolve this!! Because if they do change out my engine mounts to see if the vibe goes away....Acura will come back to hound them about the cost. Well...seems they dont really care if the customer comes hounding them instead.
I'm getting very annoyed about the vibes and the dealership's who-cares attitude. SHouldnt they try to troubleshoot more...instead of test-driving (for 100 odd miles!) and doing inspections? I feel like i purchased my extended warranty for nothing!
ANyone has similar experience (or a better one) with thier dealerships on this problem before? Like to hear your views.
Thanks.

My wife's CRV is a 4 banger too....no vibes absolutely in cold morn startups or when stopped with gear in drive. It makes my TSX feels cheap and poorly made by comparison! Maybe its because the CRV only has 1500 miles now

Anyone with a vibration problem, check your engine mounts. There is a total of 6 mounts (front, back, right) on engine, transmission mount, and 2 subframe mounts.
The front mount (maybe bak too?) has a vacuum hose connected to it. It may be that it came off the mount or got squished.
I had vibration on my car right after I misshifted and damaged my pressure plate. I replaced the clutch setup and now my car is fine, so the vibration could be due to misbalancing in your engine/tranny as well.

But I'm also talking about the vibes on cold morning startups when car is at idling and in N too. Stop sign stops is just one of the instances that i feel the vibes....sorry perhaps I wasnt clear enough.
When warmed up after a few mins drive...my TSX will vibrate too when in Neutral especially when Climate Control is on. Like most have mentioned here.

I dunno why but lately Acura have being turning out very shoddy jobs. They replaced my door lock actuator....left massive prints on my door panel and a screwdriver nick on the side of the panel for my keepsake. Rear brakes went in squealing, comes out still squealing on brand new pads. And like some have reported...they can never adjust the steering wheel to point straight after a tire rotation and alignment!
All these makes me think how well they run the checks on my vibe probs.
Its seriously begining to piss me off.

What did the independent mechanic find?
If/When you took it to Acura - did they fix whatever the mechanic found?
My warranty is about to run out

My TSX just went back to the dealer today, they didnt do a proper job on my last 60K svc. Steering wheel cocked to 11 oclock when drivin straight and brakes still squealing after brake job.
I told my svc manager to look at the vibration problem again coz I insist that it is not normal....he seems pissed off
but says he is gg to pull some dsc codes off to diagnose and stuff. Will update again.
3rd day and my TSX is still in dealership. I called my service manager for an update but no response after i left a voicemail. Guess they are realyy busy.
Does checking engine/transmission mounts, wheel alignment and fixing squealing new brakes take that long? sheesh.
Anyway, folks if you notice your TSX vibrates a tad more especially during cold morning starts, it might be normal? Coz i'm driving a relatively new courtesy TSX (7500 miles) for the past 3 days and it vibrates thru the steering wheel quite noticeably in the morn. As the car warms...the vibes disappeared and seems pretty normal for the rest of the drive.
But then, one can argue courtesy cars are flogged hard and the vibes might be signs of premature wear....somewhere.

Read ABOVE a few posts and you can see that I've specified that my TSX NOT ONLY vibrates during cold morn starts but also when fully stopped when transmission is still in drive. Even after the car is fully warmed up. The post to which you quoted is my update to TSXowner1 about my situation and is only part of the story.
A few TSX owners here are experiencing the exact same probs as me...are you saying all of us here are wasting our dealership's time?
With my '05 TSX I have been having the same vibration problems (when car is stopped in D). My problems have been there since the first day I picked up the car... Now I have 50 K on it and seems to be getting worse... Continuous reports to several dealerships regarding this issue yields no success but to bear this pain of purchasing ACURA. I Bought ACURA thinking that it has least problems and excellent customer service... sure has excellent customer service because they listen you... but they only listen and acknowledge what you said but don't fix problems... according to ACURA any problem that is reported by more than one customer is Not a problem, instead that is how the car is made... so ACURA is perfect and get use to what you think is problem.....

You see, the way Acura sees it is this (as told to me by the svc manager); If there is nothing wrong (which means it must be hard failure), Acura cant change the damn thing out...be it transmission mounts or engine mounts. Say they zoom in to this areas....even if the transmission mounts is wearing near the upper limits of specifications, dealershop still cant change it out..else Acura will made them pay out of thier own pocks. It has to be completely broken before they will do anything. SO say our mounts could be sagging down, they still cant touch it...at which point i interuppted him and asked "So you saying my mounts are sagging?" to which he replied "uhh......no...not really. I uhm...meant it hypothetically." and tried to change the subject.
Ok......so i think..OK mounts are a little tricky....they are wear n tear items and dealership may not like to change them out due to the hassles..... but then I've got this other problem for the longerst time; when my A/C is on...it sometimes would make a loud high-pitched "farting" noise. Its intermentent at first and dealership had a hard time duplicating it. They finally heard it when i brought the car in one day and you know what?? SAME BS. They "checked" the A/C system and everything looks OK. And if everything looks OK, they CANT change things out. Even the service manager knows this problem exist on some TSXs. Its actually some relief valve from the A/C thaz making the noise and unless the valve breaks or fails TOTALLY, Acura cant do anything for me.
Oh and BTW.....my steering wheel is still cocked to the left. They said the prob was low tire pressure and "fixed" it. I guess this is thier shortcut to a proper alignment.
AInt that cool? We paid $2000 for a 75000miles ext. warranty and this is the quality of work they give me. 4 Working days in the dealership and nobody can fix any damn problems.
This is my last Acura ever!

Be interested to see if people having the issue have AT or MT.
Somebody already said it, but 4 cylinder engines in general tend to be buzzier and have more vibes than other types of engine designs, and it's especially true for larger displacement
Inline-4's like a 2.4 compared to 1.6's or 1.8's.
The smallest little inbalance in the rotating assembly will cause this. If the engine was built to racing standards with every piece of the rotating assembly micro-balanced with each other then it probably wouldnt vibrate at all, but production engines arent built to those tolerances and have some fudge factor that contributes to little annoying things like this.

The vibration is normal in 4 cylinders. In my 07 TSX AT it is very noticeable when cold, but I just shift it into neutral if it becomes too irritating.
But the Acura is significantly more smoother than my 04 Audi A4 1.8T with Tiptronic. I always put my car in neutral when I had the Audi. I think the Honda engineers must have designed better balance shafts to reduce the problem.
It is a small price to pay for 205 HP and an automatic.

Yea, acura makes the best handling front wheel drives out there. I like the way my tsx drives, handles and accelerates (although my 2004 model only have 200HP
)
But the thing about this vibration issue that annoys me is that....it seems to get stronger as the car gets older or the milage piles on. To me, thaz like premature wear or something. And this car isnt abused or anything.....I'm not saying I'm a saint on the road , afew enthusiastic acceleration or cornering from time to time...but nothing too extreme.
SOmetimes the vibes are so bad, we could practically hear it resonate throughout the front cabin.
Quirks and less than competent dealer service aside, this car rocks! (no pun intended, hehe)

My 04 does the same with the climate control on, but it's @ 750RPM (idle) when I feel it. I did notice when I bought it a few weeks ago (yes i bought it used with 24k miles), the dealer filled it up with gas after the purchase. I drove back to the area with the gas and noticed they only had one pump. I have a feeling they put in some 87 octane fuel since it was a ford dealership, which caused it to run a little rough.
I put some chevron techron injector cleaner in it, and some chevron gas and it's eased up.
Side note - when I had my Civic, i had a issue with it idling rough and hesitated on starts. The service guy at the dealership used to race hondas (so he said) and stated a lot of gases have low burn off temps, which could be the reason why and to put in Chevron gas. Ever since, I've used nothing but and never really had an issue. My F150 used to idle rough when I used anything else.
I'm no expert, but this is my experience with rough idling and shaking.

Wow, I'm glad I checked this forum before bringing my car to Acura.
My 07AT only has 1700 miles on it, and the vibration when idle is sooo annoying. But I guess its just something I have to live with. I came from a 2001 Maxima...and that engine was extremely smooth when idle.
I keep putting the car in neutral when sitting at a stoplight, because the vibration drives me crazy. I hope it doesn't get any worse with age.....

I CAN NOT BELIEVE that people are saying and accepting this as normal and shifting into neutral at every **&()* stop.......this is not normal!!! i hope all of you driven some other types of cars so you know it is NOT normal. If I bought AT i wanna put it in D and forget about it!!!! I driven many cars before and this was never the case before......i'm goint to acura next week and i they do not take care of it i'm selling the damn thing....

I would like to add my observations with regards to vibrations in my car. I have similar problems as mentioned by others here which the dealer has reported all as normal. So, I've resigned to the fact that they are just characteristics of the car. My car is an automatic.
1) Vibration upon cold start. It does not matter what the outside temperature is, however, the vibration is worse in the colder winter months. The car will vibrate while in gear and stationary. The vibration can be felt through the steering wheel, pedal, seat and floor. This vibration will disappear after the car has been running for about 3 minutes or if the car is put in neutral.
2)Vibration when the A/C engages. This can even be felt whilst driving and can be felt as a thump through the gas pedal.
3)Vibration whilst accelerating/cruising around 2000RPM. This seems to happen in all gears but is most noticeable in 4th and 5th gear, especally when trying to maintain constant speed on an incline or whilst engine braking on a decline.

so... after more search-fu, i found this thread...
i recently got UR pulley set installed and since then my car noticeably vibrates at idle in "D". yes, i have a 5AT. problem can't be the pulleys since at speed and when accelerating, the vibration remains pretty much the same; in other words, it doesn't get any worse.
like the posters above, the vibration gets a little better with the a/c off. hrm... someone in another thread suggested neutralizing motor on the engine mounts... any thoughts on that?

I have a 2004 TSX AT and it has 113k on it. Bought it at 103k a few months ago and I have ALWAYS put premium gas in it until I decided not to pay for premium anymore a few months ago and ever since my idling has gotten noticeably worse... Just put premium in the last 3 fill ups and it idles better, but still rough...And my TSX also idles extremely rough with the A/C on, and also when I start it, every time I start it...
I also got horrible service from Acura in San Diego with other problems. Everything that doesn't seem normal to us is very normal to them... They compared this noise I was complaining about to two other models the same as mine and they made the same noise, so they told me it was normal and they couldn't do anything about it... Seriously, Acura dealers are horrible!! (I heard Nissan is worse though, haha)

EDIT: To stay on topic, my TSX (06 Auto, 40k) has always exhibited the exact same characteristics as the OP states. Rough idle before warming up, always rough idle when the a/c is engaged. Unfortunately, this really is how our cars are made or maybe poorly made?
Some people notice it more than others, but it's not something that can be fixed. HOWEVER, if you look at some Honda Accord (08 I believe) TSB's that are out there, there is one that actually looks just like the rough idling issue that we have for our TSX. The TSB mentions adding a weight to one of the motor mounts to offset the vibrating engine at idle. Maybe someone can find the TSB. I think it's on the "other" forum somewhere. Anyways, it looks like Honda released a TSB to fix this on the Accords, but no such luck on for our poor old TSX's.
