Throttle response not smooth

I searched on this (a little) and didn't find much. Let me try to describe what I'm noticing and tell me if anyone else experiences it, too, and if there's any fix for it. I have an '04 6MT, when I'm crusing along (at about any speed, say 30 mph) in 3rd or 4th gear, and I'm off the throttle and then I get back on the throttle, no matter how lightly or smoothly I try to engage the throttle I feel a small "jerk" rather than smoothly opening the throttle.

My wife noticed it, too, from the passenger seat. It's almost like, when I first start pushing the gas pedal, nothing happens (just for the smallest fraction of a second), then it kind of "pops". It's only if I'm trying to ease back into the pedal. If I jump on the pedal, the response is immediate, so I'm not describing a lag in throttle response in terms of quick acceleration. I'm trying to describe a small "jerk" when trying to apply the throttle smoothly with the clutch already out and the car rolling along. Anyone else notice this? Thoughts?

Yeah, I definitely notice this as well when I get back onto the pedal lightly. I feel this exactly in my 05 6mt a lot, the little kick when you tap back on the gas. It doesn't really bother me, but if it's a problem, I'd like to be notified as to the solution.

This happens on my car too - but somehow it doesn't bother me. I once drove an Infiniti Q45 a few years ago and on that car, when you got back on the gas lightly when cruising around 45-55 mph, the entire driveline shook. And I don't think there was anything wrong with the Q, that's just the way it was. Anyone know if the TL does the same thing?

It's the DBW hesitation.

Supposedly I read somewhere, they tweaked this in the 06s to not be as noticeable.

Happens on my 05 6MT as well, but I think it's just the sensitive DBW (?). Once in a while I can ease onto it without the "stutter".

I'd have to agree. There is no throttle wire linkeage to "feather". The Drive-By-Wire sensors either pick up the change in throttle or they don't. Its always a small step function.

I was gonna post this today until I came across this thread.

It is annoying, and yes, my passengers notice it... I wonder if there's a way to tweak the sensitivity of the DBW without affecting anything else? Doubtful but it'd be nice.

Yes, I did that. AZ staff requested I change my avatar and they removed my old one for me. Got to try out my animated GIF and Photoshop skills making this one. I'm happy with the result but I liked my old avatar better.

It's not only you guys in the States who have this problem. Us here in the upside down country also experience this throttle jerk.

I find that stepping on the top portion of the gas pedal reduces the stutter, maybe cause the angle of increase is in a smaller increment (?).

Oh, yes... the "Coast & Jerk". I have it too... I posted the same thing soon after purchasing my '05 6MT. It seems to be an issue with all 6MT TSX's. In my opinion, it has something to do with the drive-by-wire throttle system. Basically, you will learn to reduce the symptom in time. To be honest... I rarely notice it anymore.

I know that this can't be a good thing for the motor mounts. I'm willing to bet money that motor mounts on a 6MT will not last nearly as long as on the auto because of this

Thanks for all the responses. I feel better knowing it isn't just my car. It doesn't bother me, really, just wanted to know whether it's common. I also notice that it's more pronounced the lower the gear -- i.e., pretty noticeable in 3rd, considerably less so in 5th, almost imperceptible in 6th.

Eeyore, I'm bummed about your avatar change. I guess this is a family forum, after all.

well I have a 5at and I get the same thing. I have big feet so its not comfortable for me to press the top of the gas pedal because it makes it hard as hell to hit the brake. This will smooth out the ride but makes it harder to drive. I notice trying to accelerate without a jerk is almost impossible since no matter how slowly i try and hit the pedal it like builds tension then releases.

I notice the biggest throttle jerk is from 1st to 2nd or when I let my foot off the gas at slow speeds then press it again.
