Teeth missing on main drive gear - Manual 6 speed
Hi Folks,
My 2004 TSX with 63000 Km is in the Acura dealership waiting for a warranty repair for two teeth missing on main drive gear. Anybody else had this?
I baby the car and seldom drive it hard. Changed transmission oil at 48000 km. I commute 80 km to work each day so most driving is highway miles. I have to wait for 3 to 4 weeks for the part to be shipped from Japan and I hate driving the Pontiac Grand Am that Acura supplied as a free rental.
I noticed a regular but slight THUMP THUMP while driving. Sounded like a tire or brake grab but disappeared if coasting. Shaken my confidence a bit in the product, I must say!
Rod.

Teeth missing from gear
I asked if it was something I did and was told No. It is a manufacturing defect. The new gear has to come from Japan and will take 4 weeks. Service Manager says that this shows that it is an isolated case?
Indeed, I don't remember reading of anyhting about this in here. Manufacturing defect can happen to even the best car, or best carmaker in the world. It doesn't make your car a lemon.
If it's a gear inside the tranny itself I doubt they'll replace just the gear - they usually swap the tranny and ship the old one back for repair (the tranny has to come out for the gear change anyway). Two broken teeth bouncing around inside a tranny can screw other things up.

We should ask eviljohn about this since he works for acura!! But at Suby, that's what we do if it's under warranty, just replace instead of overhaul. That kinda ties into why there are very few good mechanics now cause there are no more mechanics now, we're just parts installers.
