Question Strange Scraping Noise

I have had a problem with my TSX since it was delivered. The very best way to describe the sound is as if something drops down from the engine, scrapes across the ground and then pops back up into the engine. It only happens when I have been parked and then slowly accelerate. It has become more frequent and the "scrape" sound is lasting longer. My TSX is at the dealer in service and they can't seem to figure out what is wrong. What is really strange is that the TSX they have given me as a loaner is making the same noise. Has anyone else encountered this problem?

Never heard of this before. The loaner did it too?

How much do you weigh?

I weigh 128 lbs. But it's done it with my 6 year old in the back seat, with me in the car alone and with my boyfriend in the passenger seat. There doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason for it happening and it's very random.

The antilock brakes test themselves when you first start out. Hard for me to say since I cant hear the noise but maybe thats what you are hearing.

That would make sense except for twice in the past week it did it after I had been driving for several yards and it scraped for like 5-10 seconds. And it was SO loud that it sounded like all of my tires had come off and I was driving the car like a boat on concrete. Plus, it comes from the middle of the front of the car, not from both sides of the brakes. It's the DARNDEST thing! I appreciate your thoughts though!

hey dude, I've been having the same problem. My tsx has 3000 miles on it, i've had it for 2 months, started hearing it for 2 to 3 weeks now. It happens when you parked your car for awhile, after you start the engine, it usually happens within the first 30 seconds. Sounds like a scraping noise on the bottom of your car.. i don't know what it is. Mine doesn't last that long but it's annoying. Did you get any updates from your service? If I come to acura with this problem, they will look at it for free??

I'm sooooo glad someone else finally says they hear it too! Yes, they will look at it for free....it's under warranty. The dealer told me that it is the ABS brakes "testing" themselves. Of course, they were never able to make the car make the sound for them to hear it themselves. Sounds like crap to me because I can't imagine any car should EVER make a sound like that. Do you? And mine was getting worse and worse. I told them I just wanted my car back and I think I will wait until something blows up since they couldn't figure it out. PLEASE let me know if you take yours to the dealer and tell me what they say. Thanks!!

I think everyone's TSX makes a sound when the ABS resets. Mine makes a small pop which I can feel more than hear when I start driving. Yours sounds strangely long, but its normal as far as I know.

I can literally feel a scrape under my gas pedal. I appreciate everyone's thoughts, but I think there really is something wrong with my car. I just have to hope something horrible doesn't go wrong and they can figure it out someday.

I feel the same thing! I have no idea what it is but a new car shouldn't be making a sound and a feeling like that, that's for sure. On the one hand I wish it was the ABS but if that was the case we wouldn't be feeling it under the gas pedal right?

I am soooo glad to hear that others are having the same problem. Not that I want anyone to have anything wrong with their cars, but maybe we can find a service department that can actually figure out what the problem is. I might take mine to a different dealership to see if their service has better luck. I will certainly post if I find the problem and hope you will do the same. Thanks!

I have the abs test themselfs, and once in awhile I hear something else, after the ABS self test...Kind of like a clunk to me or a thunk...then its gone..but no scraping, I do feel it in the gas pedal tho....

I thought maybe a transmission problem or just its breaking in? ...if it gets worst
I will call the dealer.

If the dealer finds something let us know...

A few times it actually sounded like someone took the wheels off my car and it just scraped across the ground! Hasn't been THAT bad in a couple of weeks though. I have 4,000 miles on my car so far, so I would *think* it would be broken in, wouldn't you? This is so great to get all this feedback. Now we just need to find the problem, huh??

My sound is not that bad... check your tranny fluid for metal.

With all that noise, you would think you can find something...
Oh..what type of transmission do you have at or man?

I agree - you would think you could find something. I'll check the fluid - thanks for the idea. I have an automatic transmission.

but it's so early for the transmission fluid to go wrong, is it? Did you change your engine oil yet?

Yes, my boyfriend made me change it at 3,000 miles even though the manual says you can wait 10,000

hmm changing your oil too early might be bad for the car sometimes. But did you check your transmission oil? was it okay?

i think you have to park the car for at least 8 hours in order for the noise to appear. That's why your dealer didn't locate the sound

Ok, I think I have the same problem as you although mine doesn't seem too loud like yours but loud enough. It seems to happen whenever I use the e- brake (my driveway has a slight angle) and park it over night. I think I agree with the notion that you have to park it for a long time to hear that noise. But I seem to notice that I hear it in the morning, after releasing the e-brake. It only lasts a few seconds.

I am soooo glad I found this message board. I just started having this problem. I have almost 6000 miles and my dealer didn't even make up an excuse. They had it for 2 days and just said they couldn't find it and want me to bring it back in a week.

I've had the same "clunking" noise and then feeling a scrape under the gas pedal. It happens when I pull out of my spot in the morning as I am straightening my steering wheel again. It started around 1000 miles (or at least that's what I first noticed it) and now I'm at 4500, and it still happens almost every morning. I wonder if it happens more if my ABS system had to engage the day before? With all this damned rain and driving in South Jersey and Philly (lots of traffic lights/potholes/manhole covers/construction) ABS has engaged more than I prefer! I hope it's just ABS testing itself because that scraping sound is quite alarming! I think I'll bring it up with my dealer anyway when I go in for my first service visit.

Scrapping sound possible trouble found

I have been having the exact same problem since about 3000 miles. I think mine started as a grind/scrape I felt when turning. Of course the dealers never found it. Now I'm at 8000 miles and I started getting this constant humming sound. Dealer found that and said I have a bad/missing hub bearing. I thinking that the original grind and scraping sound was the axel rubbing at the joint with the hub. Now I'm concerned that the axel or hub may be damaged since it's been happening for almost 5000 miles. I am suggesting we all contact Acura as a united front because obviously something is wrong with all of our cars. Have your dealer check for the same problem.

i took mine to the dealer regarding scraping noise, they say they hear nothing. What should I do? I'm on 4,000 miles. Should I wait for the service date at 7500 or should i bring it in again to address this issue??

O Control, I have the same problem with my TSX it's got only 750miles.
The scraping noise was there since 50miles.
It happens when the car is moving slowly, near stop.

I think the noise is from back seat. I sat on back seat and carefully moved and the same noise was there.

I am taking my car to dealer for several problems such as rattles, brake squeak, clutch pedal clicking, unusually slow acceleration(I consider it hesitaion), and the back seat noise.

I am not sure if they will fix them or not. But I am sure my brand new TSX has more problems than my old 85 BMW 325e.

I wish I had a perfect condition TSX......

0 Control,
Any resolution to your problem?
I think I have the same problem.
Its been progressively getting worse. It started out as an infrequent faint chatter. Its now a big thunk-clunk as I pull away from the driveway most mornings.
I've been shadowing this thread hoping for some insights.

I purchased my TSX in May and have had the same strange noise problem. I have less than 1000 miles on it and noticed the "scrape" a few days after I bought it. I described it to my dealer and they act like they have never heard of such a problem. Obviously it is something that the dealers should know about if SO many people are experiencing the same issue. Glad I found this site. I thought I might be the only one too.

I'm pretty sure that the noises most of you are hearing after starting the car after having it sitting for a few hours is like some of you have said already its the abs pump doing a self test. Why you may ask. Well. the fact is that the fluid in the abs modulator and accumulator should be cycled out of there every once in awhile to prevent moisture and sediment to build. since most of us dont activate the abs system on a frequent basis the computer does it for you. Its for the benefit of the longevity of this system, trust me. Anywayz as far as the clunck noise that you can feel under the car. That is youre brake shims hitting the caliper normally happens as soon as you step on the brakes when first starting to drive the car after it has been siitting for a while as well. In reverse or forward drive> this too is normal. there is a bit of play between the brake pad and caliper so when applying the brake for the first time after car's been sitting the shim will hit the caliper causing this clunk you hear.

I really hope this helps If youre dealer is not even trying. You need to go elsewhere.---JAYCEE..1

Ofcourse theyre gonna tell you they cant hear it because if they cant hear it they cant fix it. Even though I think the noise youre hearing is the abs pump doing the self test. The fact is that a dealer likes to refer to your concern as a BS problem and if your advisor is lazy hes not gonna put forth any effort to try and answer youre question. Try asking for managers opinion or input on the matter if the manager seems to give a flying hoot about youre concern its time to switch dealers.
--JAYCEE.......1
To answer your question. If It bothers you dont wait. even though it may be a normal operation. You need to be 100% sure...

Are you guys parked with the E brake on? My tsx makes the scraping noise after my friend parked it with my e-brake on. After that I pulled it down and drove and I heard that noise. My car is auto.

ttsxx,
I always park with my e-brake on. I also have an AT.
I don't get it. What is it about the e-brake that would cause such a noise???

I have an AT and mine does the same thing. I have 10K miles on it, but it has been doing it for quite sometime, just as you describe.
