Steering wheel shaking when braking

What's the likely cause for the steering wheel shaking when the brake is being applied? Tire balance, alignment, brake pad, etc?

Thanks.

If that's the only time it shakes, it sounds like a warped front rotor. It should be covered under warranty.

Highly doubt the dealership will fix that under warranty.

Do you or anyone else that drives the car ride the brakes alot?

No, I don't ride the brakes, but no car so new should have warped rotors. The dealer can't prove any abuse just looking at it (though they may think it) and they will fix it under warranty. I'd be willing to bet they will fix it under warranty.

I agree. But I also agree the dealer may be a bunch of jackasses.

Don't worry about it. Take it to the dealer. The TSX is a very important car to Acura. They don't want any negative vibes whatsoever.

Had same problem on my EL when it was less than 12 months. I'm very careful with brakes as I know it is a week point on Acura/Honda products. But I'm not the only driver on this car :-* .

So took it in (back in 1998) and they resurfaced the rotors, no questions asked

Take it in and they'll fix it for free.

Uh oh...I hope this car doesn't turn into a "TL" troublecase.

Thanks for the suggestion. I don't ride the brakes. Actually it's not really that bad; I have to be paying attention to notice it. But I'd like to have it resolved before getting worse.

The other problem i'm having is a somewhat-too-loose driver's seat. It doesn't lock perfectly in place; therefore, it slides a little back and forth when braking. Somebody suggested that there was nothing the dealer could do unless a recall of the seat happens. I'll see if my dealer can do something about it if I bring it up.

And then of course there's this inaccurate temperature gauge. Like others have mentioned, it seems to be 3-5 degrees higher than the forecast. The interesting thing is, I always feel the radio forecast is too low, and the guage reading actually gives me a better picture.

Definately get that loose seat to the dealer, it could be a safety issue. About the temperature indicator, you can adjust is up or down - instructions are in the manual. Get the Weatherbug for your computer - if it is offered in Atlanta. It will give you realtime temperature readings on your computer that are local for your area and use that to check the temperature reading.

Thanks. Do you mean the user manual or service manual? If the former, I don't recall seeing any instructions. If the latter, well I don't have one.

It will be in the user manual. There is another recent thread on here about it, so that thread may have more details.

My wife experienced that on her 2003 TLS. Had the tires balanced and it didn't fix the problem. Mentioned it to Acura Service when we took it in for the 30K service. When we picked it up, the service tech said they resurfaced the rotors and replaced the front brake pads - NO CHARGE. No problems since.

Riding the brakes is not the only way to warp rotors...

Believe it or not, washing your car with the rotors hot will do just the same... Or if you live somewhere where there is lots of rain and you go through a puddle deep enough to saturate or splash the hot rotors with cold water, will in fact warp the rotors...

Many people don't realize that taking your car to the car wash (espeically the automatic ones that spray water on the wheels) when the rotors are hot will warp the rotors over time.

The best thing to do is let the rotors cool down before getting your car washed.

Actually, the best thing to do is to not go to the carwash at all.

Something about a bunch of clothes (soft or not) slapping against your beautifully new car about 100 times a minute that just makes me want to vomit.

Just as a little aside. The weatherbug has spyware in it. There is something better that doesn't have spyware and costs the same...$0.00, it's called weatherpulse available from TROPIC DESIGNS

And now back to your regularly scheduled thread.

My rotors have been warped for a few weeks now, and its only getting worse. at highway speeds, above 50mph, its very noticeable. even coming to a stoplight i can barely feel it. this is dissapointing as i dont right the brakes or drive crazy. just everyday driving.

good point Higiman!! any sudden extreme temperature change will wrap the rotor, that why i always warm up my brake before i hit high way exit, cool down before car wash. drive on highway in winter for 10 minutes or more will make rotor cold, and sudden hard brake (such bring the speed down to exit high way) will wrap the rotor, i always touch brake a few time before i exit to bring the temp on the rotor up, no rotor problem on my previous 95 accord, did not need resurface and sold at 140,000km.
