Unhappy Small Crack in Windshield

Hey guys, I found a small crack in my windshield this morning. Does anyone know if this is small enough to be patched? Or am I going to need a new one?

The pit itself is pretty small, but there are 2 small crack lines that formed. Looks like they would fit inside a quarter...

that pit is patchable.. it will prevent the cracks on the side from getting any longer/larger

however, those crack lines will remain...

i had a smiliar sized crack on my windshield about a month ago, and 2 nights later it grew to over 10" long... needless to say, I shelled out $300 to replace my windshield ... grrrr...

Ok, good to know. I've been googling it and found a repair place. Looks like they can do it for $35

Or theirs this: http://www.alltvstuff.com/leat5.html

Yeah, looks repairable.
BUT -----> Go in and get it done ASAP. One day of strange weather or one pothole and that crack will be huge.

For $35-$50, get it done professionally. Those kits are garbage IMO.

That looks repairable! Sux! Happened to me less than a week after getting it. Get it repaired before it gets cold. What happens up herrr in WA is....you get a small chip, then the car sits outside over night and it gets super cold. Then when you get in it in the morning and turn the defroster on to heat up the windshield, the glass heats up and you can literally watch the crack spread accross the windshield right in front of your eyes. It can go from a chip to a 3 foot crack all the way accross in a matter of seconds. Just get it repaired asap. I went to Jiffy Lube for an emergency oil change and they did it for free. Insurance paid.

You can also get it done free if your insurance is like mine (Wawanesa). I have had 2 chips so far and they were both billed direct to insurance with no effect on my rates.

I went to All Star Auto Glass off Morena down here in SD. I would imagine they have locations all over SOCAL. It was $45 normally but billed direct to insurance and they do good work - I had the first one done over a year ago and the damage has not spread.

The glass place told me anything a quarter sized and under is usually repairable.

BTW I am up to 3 chips now. Either Acura glass is bad or SoCal roads suck.

joerockt,

Ask your insurance company about their policy on cracks. When I was with GEICO I got a similar pit w/ crack on my winshield. A friend advised me to do the same, and I found out geico does winshield patches for free to people with full coverage (not just collision), I guess its cheaper for them than covering the replacment winshield when the time comes. In and out in an hour and I had a repaired winshield and I couldn't even find the original mark.

edit: just noticed the guy above me said the same thing.

Keep your car in a aircondition garage if it's possible. Heat will make that spread faster than Pamela Anderson's legs.

It's not an AC'ed garage, it a garage in a house with AC, the garage is cooled by the house AC. But the point was to try to keep the car in as cool of a place as possible.

Not necessarily the glass, I went thru two windshields inside of three years here in my previous car (Ford). Both times rather large rocks. Never even had a chance to repair them, the normal temperature fluctuation throughout the day while at work caused them to grow from a divot to cracks halfway across the windshield.

The kits do a good job in holding the cracks/lines in its place, but it would be best to shell out $40-50 on a professional repair.

I also used Safelight for a couple of chips on my Minivan. Insurance covered it 100% both times. Plus they come to your house or work.
