Should / Will Acura replace my cracking Passenger's Seat?

Has anybody had any experience with trying to replace a seat that looks like it's cracking?

My passenger seat is showing some really distinct creases that look like they could turn into cracks over time. I have about 8500 miles on my car and that seems to be the only place on my seats that are showing this. In fact, the creases were there when I first bought the car and I figured that it was not a big deal. The creases have gotten more and more defined since I've had the car. The major kicker though, is that I don't even ride with passengers too often. Maybe once or twice a week.

Has anybody had any experience with trying to get a seat replaced with their dealer under warranty?

Actually I'm pretty sure I know what you might be talking about. I see it all the time mostly on RSX's usually because the bucket seats rubb off your ass every time you get in and out, over time (short time frame) considering you only got 8500 miles, that wears the seat down. BTW that area thats creased will crack in the near future and to answer your question YES the dealer should replace it warranty.

Note: Not sure if you did this after purchasing your veh. but leather treatment is essential for the quality and lifetime of your leather seats. I'm sure there is a post on here that will refer you to the best stuff people are using.

Hope that hels a bit...

Aside from the montly leather treatment it is also wise to put the seat as far back as it will go. People are less likely to rub against the side bolster when they get in/out.

I'm seeing some creases in my driver's seat, on the sides. However, I believe those side bolsters are vinyl, not leather, so at least in my case it is the vinyl that is creasing/cracking. My understanding is that only the perforated portions of the seat/steering wheel/shifter are true leather. Please correct me if I'm wrong! (I'm haven't been doing leather treatment on the parts I thought are vinyl.)

You should apply the conditioner to the entire seat. There has been mixed talk about whether or not those parts are vinyl, but the leather conditioner won't hurt either way.

As far as everyone having creases, what color is your interior? I assume its ebony, but post that also so we can see if its a common issue.

The side bolsters are vinyl. The only leather in the TSX is the peforated. Applying leather conditioner to the vinyl will actually just result in the built up of gunk and dirt on the vinyl. So, in that sense, it can hurt.

If you want a product that works on both the Vinyl and leather, try 303 Aerospace Protectant. For free samples, go here:

There's been debate about this in other threads already - for more detail search but...

The entire area that touches you is leather, not just the perforated parts. The sides and back are vinyl.

I'll have to respectfully disagree. If you depress the non-perforated parts of the car, they regain their shape immediately. That is a quality of vinyl. Leather will retain a displacement for a short period of time. I don't think there is any leather in the car except the perforated inserts in the middle of the seat.

And, btw, if you do a search here, you'll also find several threads in which that specific conclusion is drawn.

Acura is pretty clear about this. They advertise the TSX as having "perforated leather trim interior." In other words, anything not perforated is not leather.

Final point: the backs are not leather in most "leather interiors." On our Audi A4, we had to pay an extra $1000 to get "full leather seats." Otherwise, they come with a "pleather" backing that is acutally quite good.

Heh

Funny we can read different things into the same thread. By the end of that thread darth62, there are a handful of posts that support the "entire seat face is leather" camp - hardly a consensus. I go for that conclusion because I noticed a difference in the way the sides and the non-perfed seat tops took the different products I've used on them.

Either way, it's sad that we can't actually find out the truth from anyone who would know.

Rereading my post - apologies for stating as fact my opinion. But I am right.

Plus, take the driver's side door armrest for instance. There's the perforated part which is leather, and there's the arm rest itself which is not perforated. But as far as I can tell... looks like leather, smells like leather, feels like leather. I think it is, no?

Completely agree. I have to go to the dealer on Monday, and will ask to see if they know.

I have some creases in the bolsters as well. The creases are just deep and are not truly "cracks". It's quite telling that so many enthusiasts can't tell the difference. Must be pretty nice vinyl. The materials scientists have done a good job, heh? If anyone really want's to know, contact someone who has reported their car "totaled" on the board and see if they can visit it in the junkyard and cut the seat to see the underside. I'm in the camp of only the perforated sections being leather, everything else is a polymer. Hopefully, with care, the seat will hold up as long as I know the rest of the car will. Maybe right before the warranty runs out, the grinding seat will appear and I'll be able to get a replacement. No big deal either way, the car is just fun to drive and problem-free so far.

My only point here is that we should know exactly what parts of the seat are plastic and which are leather. Otherwise, it is like false advertising.

Exactly!

I don't really care that much if it is or isn't leather - I just wanna know what product to put where.

I get the only choice is to use 303 Aerospace Protectant, since it works fine on leather and Vinyl.
