Shift gate bulb socket is jacked

My shift gate bulb socket/holder has a short in it. I went to change the bulb (again--twice now), and I tested it before re-assembling the escutcheon (a.k.a. "shift gate"), and I saw that it had a short. For safety reasons, I clipped the wires just below the black plastic socket and wrapped each with elec. tape. and reassembled. Tomorrow, my new shift gate assy. arrives, and I'd like to replace the light at the same time. I have a couple of questions. (I know about basic electrical stuff--I've installed many wall sockets, switches, chandeliers, and ceiling fans over the years.)

1) I clipped the bulb holder assy., leaving about 1" of wire attached, from the light that is above/inserts into the center storage bin (I don't need a light there.) What I intend to do is splice the wires from the shift gate light to the wires extending from the bottom of the socket I clipped, solder the connection, tape, and be on my merry way. The bulbs are the same (#74), so would it be okay to use this be okay to do? Any resistance issues or anything?

2) The wires for the shift gate light are both black, unlike the ones from the storage bin light assy. Does anyone know which is positive?
