Shaking while accelerating
Shaking while accelerating
I've encountered a problem...my car is shaking upon acceleration, most noticeably while accelerating at low rpm, but also while on the highway. It's an '04 with 116,000 miles on it. I first thought the clutch might be slipping, but it doesn't seem like a classic case of clutch-slip. It seems worse in the even-numbered gears, but that just might be me over analyzing it. Does anyone else have any ideas or similar experience? My mechanic drove it today and was perplexed. I should have it back to him for a thorough check-up in a day or two.
I just had new tires put on a month ago and it only shakes while I'm on the gas. If I'm cruising at 70 mph or decelerating there's no noticeable problem , but if I hit the gas there's a whole lotta shakin. The engine sounds and feels normal and the rpms haven't changed in any way.
I'm assuming that it's something in the drivetrain at this point. I'll find out next week though...

I have had the same problem on my 06 since about 5000 miles. I had them look at it at around 8k and they did something with the transmission saying there was "too much play". I didn't have the car for about a week with them saying the part was in high demand. After about 1000 miles after the fix the same thing came back. I now have 20k and it is coming more pronounced. Mine is most pronounced in 2nd with a decent amount of throttle. If you are going uphill slightly you feel it even more.
I'll let you know what they fix this time.....I have an appointment this week.

Update: My mechanic checked the wheels, bearings, tires - no problems. Drained the trans fluid and found a lot of fine metal particles - not good, but I don't think that indicates the problem.
He also pulled apart the axle and said there was a little play in it, but it didn't seem like much. However, when he gave it back the problem changed significantly. Now it doesn't shudder the way it did in 2nd and 3rd gear at low rpm. It shakes like crazy in any gear between 55 - 65 MPH now.
I just brought it back to him to have the half shafts remanufactured after my educated guessing and reading about other's similar experiences on here. I'll keep ya posted...

You could've gotten some brand new ones through excelerate for the price of the remained ones I bet. I got the Stage 0 set through him. Solved this issue that you are describing. Can't wait for Acura to not admit they don't have an issue with this either.

EDIT: I did the work myself...

Its really strange... Right when I got to about 70,000 miles I started noticing the shake, just like yours. I'm only at 70,500 right now, hopefully they won't do anything drastic so I can change them when I go home in a month.

To everyone else, I'm still very pleased with these axles and I haven't had any issues with them at all. I do not have anymore shakes at that magic speed mentioned in the thread I linked to. These axles were a perfect match.

Excelerate, I'll send you a PM soon.
Update - I ended up ordering the driveshaftshop.com axles from excelerate. He offers a great price (better than buying them direct from the manufacturer), but I think they're pretty cheap and come without a warranty. I looked them over when they came in, and they looked a little sloppy. I had them installed and the problem didn't go away - it just changed. It's much better than it was - the car only shakes a little between 20-25 MPH, but it's still not right.
For now, especially since I now have to replace the a/c, I'm just going to live with it. It just sucks to have spent several hundred dollars and still have this problem.

I had the same problems with the shaking and got raped by the service dept, $843.00 to replace the left axel. They tried to say that it was my right one at first and that I might have to replace both. I told them it was the left side in the beginning, but the tech said it was the right side. I was right all along, they ended up ripping the boot on the right side and repaced it for free since there was no rip when I brought it in. I know that Moda_way put out a DIY on this, now I wish that I could've done this my self and save the money!!

But if they aren't right, you should get them replaced. The only thing I noticed it they didn't have a shaft balancer on them and wonder if that is where your low speed shake is coming from.

I may call driveshaft shop to see if they'll do anything but it says clearly (even on the axle itself) that there is no warranty on those axles. If not I'll just live with the vibrating till the car dies, which may be soon at the rate it's going.
Update- I brought the car in for the 60,000 mile service. I asked our mechanic if he could replace the axles for me. He said I should wait until he rotated and balanced the tires first with new lugs, I had some aftermarket locks that were quite a bit larger then stock. I just got the car back and the shake seems to have gone. I tried accelerating uphill at WOT from 55-65 and no discernible shake
, I'll see if it makes any difference later when it cools off (its 107 right now).
Plus the car feels new again, the butt dyno says that the car is much happier with the new airfilter; and the 6 speed feels buttery smooth again
. The service was only $209 total too
