Replacing timing chain tensioner

I’ve spent the day replacing my timing chain tensioner. Got the old one out, but now can’t get the new one in. Spun the crankshaft back clockwise like the Acura servi e manual says, but doesn’t move enough chain slack to get the tensioner all the way in. Has anyone else had this problem? Any advice or suggestions are appreciated. It’s a 2006 TSX with 280,000 miles.
