Rear brake pads life

Hello,

Just got my 10k maintenance done and got a notification from the service rep. He said my rear brake pads have only around 4 mm left, which is a half of the original thickness. ACURA recommends 2 mm minimum. So that indicates I might need to change them on my next 5k maintenance. I am wondering if this kind of "brake eating" is too fast? My daily commute roung trip is about 10 miles and usually involves 4-5 stop-n-go.

Your comments are welecome. Share you opinon! Thanks.

I got ~24k out of my rear pads. I was almost down to the rivets or metal on metal. They had been squealing for quite a while.

When you find you need your pads replaced (either front or rear) do you replace only the front or rear or do you do all 4?

I did all four corners. However, my front OEM original pads still had at least 30% or more wear left. I just wanted a more aggressive pad on the front.

I have 51k miles and still have the originals on, but I have changed the front pads and rotors already. Was thinking about doing the rears soon. I think I'm getting a squeak out of them now.

15k miles seems a little fast to me too, but we've seen this before and I think that Honda/Acura friction material is not the best by far, so I would say... no issue. BUT, don't replace with Acura stuff again, get something better. Plenty of threads here about it.

Your braking habits are more aggressive than some of us.

Also, I think the OEM pads are a severe compromise between low noise/dust compared to durability or braking power.

I had the dealer check the brakes on my '04 at 30,000 miles (about a month ago) and the technician reported 35% wear up front and 30% wear at the rear. Having read other A'ziners say their brake wear was extensive at 30k, I was relieved.
(The tech also detected "slight pulsation" when braking from "highway speed;" he recommended no action until the problem worsens. Given what I've read here, I strongly suspect rotor warpage.)

hey TRU

And I got 22k out of my stock pads in the rear and the fronts still had about 30% left when I changed them at about 27k.

Arrow i think~

you have all the rights to ask the dealer / or body shop to show you the break pads. if you see them yourself and they are less than 3~4mm,

it would be much safer and wise to change them before causing damages...

i've spent little more than $350 trying to save some money on break pads...

but , it is always up to you.

safe drive~

58000 miles - 2004 - on original pads. My service rep can't believe how easy I am on brakes.

Replaced my rear brakes @ 28000km with 60% left in the front. Extreme shaking when I hit the brakes over 60km/h and dealer suggests replacement of front brakes too. Isn't this a little excessive? There is still 60% left! No warranty as this is wear and tear items. Has anyone gotten anywhere with warranty issues on brakes? I called Customer Service, talked to the General Manager at the dealership and filed a complaint with myopinion.acura.ca. Same response - consumer must pay!

The Acura dealership said my dad was going to fail the inspection if he didnt replace the rear brakes. They said that his rear pads needed to be replaced. There was only 20k on it.....I bet they lied.

Started to hear the noise at 58K.

That was the first time I changed rear pads by myself. Found a little help from this forum. I wasn't aware that you had to turn the piston to move it back in.
