Question Random Clunking Noise When Turning Steering Wheel HELP!!!

I get a random clunking noise when turning the steering wheel. Brought the car in to the dealer and they replaced the front struts stating that one was leaking. But noise continues and is more frequent each week. Does anyone else have this problem?

I have a similar noise like that but it's not all the time. Seems to happen in sharp turns. But mine also happens when I press on the brake sometimes, not just when I turn. I have no idea what it is either. My car was just in for an oil change and they said my brakes were fine after they looked at them. They probably didn't check the struts though.

But something else strange did happen to me that they ended up fixing for free. They found it while checking the brakes for the above noise. Apparently, somehow a bunch of the bolts holding on the front bumper came off underneath the car, and because the bumper was not on securely, it cracked a little underneath. I was SO PISSED when I found this out. At least they ended up being able to fix it by replacing the bolts and I didn't have to spend $800 on a new bumper. But they thought this was making the noise, so I thought once it was fixed, the noise would stop, but it hasn't. And it's not the brakes, so I don't know what it is. If you find out or anyone else knows already, please share!!

But the bolts coming off is VERY strange to me, because I know I never went over anything that would have grabbed the bottom of the car and caused this. I would have brought the car in right away if I'd done something like that. So I have no idea what caused that to happen. The service tech just looked at me and said, "Stay away from snow piles and anything else that can snag on the bottom of the car." Well DUH!! I know I didn't do it!!! Has this happened to anyone else?

Had mine since June 2003 and nothing like this is happening to me. Did they check the upper mounts and the sway bar bushings. Those would have taken some serious hits with the front shock being dead.

Clunking while turning the wheel is a classic symptom of worn CV joints. It would be unusual for a fairly new car to have this problem, but it happens. Your CV boot may have torn, the grease leaked out and the joint is now worn. Have any decent mechanic check it out.

^^^ what s/he said. Your CV boot may have ripped open and what you're hearing is the dirt and grime that's getting in there. Hopefully your car's under warranty cuz it can be a VERY expensive fix!

I have this same problem. Every now and then when I turn the wheel fully one way then straighten it out then turn it the opposite way and straighten it out again, I get a clunking noise in the right front wheel well the last time I straighten it out. I can sort of feel it through the floor with my clutch foot. I'm not sure if you can actually hear from the outside or not.

I thought I might have messed up my TeinSS install, so I dropped the suspension on the front and reinstalled it. The noise doesn't happen as often now, but I still hear it now and then. I have a feeling it isn't really related to the TeinSS though.

I might have my acura dealer look at the CV joint and/or boot just in case that's the problem. Hopefully I won't get any BS about my TeinSS causing the problem if it is something CV related.

I don't know about "clunking," but a "ticking" or winding sound usually means the rack & pinion is in need of repair. That was but one of the things that went wrong with a FIAT I owned many years ago:

It
Again

I'm having the same problem. It sound like a metal to metal tapping sound. I'm taking it in this week to the dealer. I think it is more related to the rack and pinion end links. I'll post the findings.

I know this is an old thread but I am getting the same clunking when straightening out after a sharp 90 deg turn. Also when applying the brakes. I get a metallic clanging over bumps if you roll down the window. The Acura mechanic said all was good underneath but it sounds like the struts. No sign of any leaks he said but keep an eye on it.
I have checked the CV joints myself, bushings, ball-joints, links and all look good. Even checked the brake caliper mounting. The only symptoms are as stated above. There is no vibration. The alignment was done recently but has had no influence on the clunk.
I am not convinced it's the struts. Does anybody else have anything to offer.
