Problem: Grinding Sound when Turning Slowely - stops if you tap brakes

Ok guys I need some help, I have tried everything I can think of to fix this problem. It is my wifes car (06 TSX) all OEM.

When you turn right it sounds like their is a grinding sound from the front brake. If you turn the wheel to the left sometimes it will make the sounds stop. ALSO if you ride the brakes just a little bit it will typically make the sound stop. To add one more variable it only seems to happen when temps are above ~60 degrees. Here is the odd part, when driving I had my wife walk by the car and she says it sounds like it is coming from the rear driver side wheel (although now I think it is doing it from multiple wheels).

To better describe the sound, to me it sounds like the brake heat shield is rubbing on the rotor while it is turning. I already bent the shield back so it is 1/4" or so away from the rotor. Originally it would only happen when going slow around turns ~5mpg, now it will make the sound even at 15-20mph and is pretty embarrassing when driving in parking lots.

I can try to get a video of it, if it would help anyone better diagnose it. HELP! Thanks.

Have you checked the pads? Sounds to me like they're shot.

Agree...the best check is does it make the sound in reverse? Usually the squealers are louder in reverse.

Brakes are brand new. It did it before the brake changes and it seems worse now. It's not so much a squeal but a low pitched grind.

Almost like a pad that is completely gone (unfortunately I have experienced that due to a frozen caliper) but not as harsh, if that makes sense.

I have never heard it happen in reverse.

I think I'm going to try to get a video in the next few days if it's not solved by then.

You should try to nail down front or rear first. My guess (semi-educated) is CV joint if it's coming from the front, wheel bearing(s) if it's coming from the rear. That's assuming whoever did the brakes didn't screw the job.

One up front and one in the rear. I did the brakes (have done many cars) but like I said it was doing it before the brake change as well. Plus when you tap on the brakes the noise goes away.

I think I'm going to take it all apart this weekend and look it over with a fine tooth comb. I still feel like its the heat shield rubbing the rotor as it turns (it sounds just like a piece of thin metal rubbing against something rotating).

Also check your shims and hardware clips to see if they are in their correct location and if they are damage.

I had this problem 3 days ago. The squealing was unbearable and only happened at slow speeds and in reverse. Forced me to take off the wheel, caliper, and rotor to see the heat shield rubbing where it shold be tucked in the middle of the rotor.

Thanks I will look into this. I swear it sounds like the heat shield, I juts haven't had time to rip it apart yet (this weekend as long as nothing comes up).
