Pot Hole in San Francisco, rims DENTED.

So, does anyone have any experience with taking this up with the city maintenence.

I was driving along a somewhat adequately lighted road and it was night time. It was raining and the posted speed limit is 45, but it was raining so i was goin 30.

All of a sudden, out of no where BAM, BAM!. Drove right smack into the deepest pothole in America. Didnt sound too good at all.

As I continued driving home I noticed a slight shimmy, but it was still driving fine so I new at least my tire didnt go flat. So I get home and see both right rims are slightly dented and somehow curbed. Pics after Christmas....

So now what, how do I take this up with the city? Any one have any advice.

Thanks in advance!

Dang Sucks to hear man....Yeah SF has some pretty bad streets. I would go and take pictures of the pothole in the daytime.

Does insurance cover this? They cover cricked windshields, why not dented rims?

I'm sure it varies greatly from city to city, but here's an excerpt from mine (in Kansas)

I drove over a pothole, will the City pay for damages to my vehicle?

Claims for damage to a vehicle as a result of driving over a pothole are not generally reimbursable. Periods of precipitation and subsequent thawing and freezing do contribute to the development of potholes, particularly at intersections and in low-lying areas where water frequently stands. The City of Lawrence Public Works Department-Street Division operates an aggressive pothole response program that includes a 24-hour Pothole reporting hotline (832-3456), internet reporting, and street crews to specifically address reported potholes. Drivers should be aware of the potential for potholes, the presence of City repair crews on busy streets and slow down to prevent accidents.

Where was this? I saw a ginormous pothole in the #3 lane on Hwy 1 right by the Alemany Blvd exit...just wondering b/c it's 45 mph there.

I don't know what you can do...I hear getting a claim from the City is like extracting teeth. Like someone else said, see if you can get pics.

Thanks for the local help.

The pothole was near Lake Merced, before The Boathouse entrance goin towards the entrance to Ocean Beach. I was trying to avoid 19th avenue beacause of Holiday Traffic. Now I wish I had just waited out the traffic.

And yes, unfortunately my wheels are aftermarket. Which are discontinued....
So much for rareness, now they are even more rare.

I wonder if this counts as, "another TSX casualty"

I had a friend he hit a pothole on a CA-87 near san jose. I -think- he got a police report and found out that it has been a documented pot hole. he got reimbursed for new rims.

Not local but from across the pond, any time this has happened, you get straight on to the local council and present them with photos of hole, inc. ruler to show depth, etc.
Submit this along with cost to repair/replace, and that's pretty much that unless they try playing silly buggers, at which point you threaten legal recourse, and all's hunky dory soon after.
It'll be whomever's got the contract to maintain the roads that gets bollocked for it - especially if the hole has been reported already.
So, get back pronto - now even, and get the documentary evidence, just in case they have scheduled the hole to be filled tomorrow, after which time it'd be harder for you to prove it was that pothole that done the damage.

No, still try for it - there should be a work order/report showing that it was indeed filled in the next day by shear coincidence.
The worst that can happen is you're no better off than you are currently - so it's worth being as convincing as you can. If you explain everything and mention asking for advice on here (you don't have to name the forum though), etc, etc. then you never know.
If you're really aggrieved, then if they reject your claim out of hand, you should seek some legal advice - often a solicitor's letter gets things looked at in a different light!

You could also get an estimate from a wheel straightening shop, and ask the city to pay repair costs rather than new replacement cost. You might have to send the wheels out of state to get them fixed, though.

I know there was a place around here called Stockton Wheel works that use to fix and straighten aftermarket wheels. It's probably about 1 1/2 hours or so from SF. Let me know if you need some more info later, and I can try an dig it up.

It's a toss up with a situation like that. I have had friends have mixed results when taking action to pay for damages caused by potholes. This won't help you now, but friends of mine that were successful, have filed a police report on-the-spot to show proof of incident and time. Then they came back and took pictures of the hole to show size (as mentioned in the post above). At that point they took it to the Street Dept of the village they were in and all was hashed out.
