Save yourself the muscle aches and get an oil filter wrench that caps on the oil filter and attaches to a drive ratchet. I've found those easier to use than the belt-type.

if u have a belt type, put something liek a sweatshirt on the filter, then use the belt type around the sweatshirt, thats what we did on my friends lancer, cuz it was a biotch ot get off, the sweatshirt offered grip. worth a try, if that doesnt work, do what PACman said, get a oil filter wrench

just take the 1st oil change to the dealer and tell them to 'hand tighten' the replacement filter. that should save you the headaches...plus you shoulda ask them for at least first FREE oil change. (i got 3 free from curry acura)

Same experience here. After messing around with it for an hour, I decided to change the oil only since it was only a few thousand miles. I have the cap-type adapter that uses a square drive ratchet and the thing just kept slipping off after applying torque.

Have a shop take it out for you. The factory uses a gorrilla to install them.

Acura figured us owners would be a bunch of sissy girls and this method is how they would get us to take the car to the dealer for oil changes instead of DIY

I had to use a pair of large channellocks for my first filter removal. The filter is so small, this wrench worked fine on it's widest jaw opening, although the filter was a mangled mass of blue sheet metal afterwards. No other type of wrench I tried had enough grip or torque to get it off.

Precisely..

People come into my work all the time with no headlights at night saying "How the hell do you change the bulbs in these cars?"

well..
Honda specifically made the cars so certified Honda/Acura techs can work on the cars. Or at least cut down on alot of the sideshop joe schmoe businesses that try to work on our cars.

Pretty much for 2 reasons they made things this way:
1. Bring Honda MORE MONEY
2. To keep the Honda standard way of life, "OUR CARS LAST FOREVER".

That's what happened with the integra..It's so easy to work on, people started throwing aftermarket parts on it, aftermarket belts/starters/radiators not knowing the tips and tricks and it merely just ruins the cars.

The integra is probably one of the best all time great economic honda cars besides the Legend. When you have people used to working on Chevy's and Ford's trying to tackle a Honda without the proper training ON the car..then you have a mess on your hands..

Honda is engineered completely different than Ford or Chevy or any other domestic brand.

So keep these things in mind.. The Japs arent dumb.

We get cars towed in from people who just took their cars to pep boys to "save money" and they did not fix the car right. Pep Boys will literally tell them. "We Can't Fix Your Car!"..What the hell? The customer probably took a second mortgage out to pay for her car to get fixed! Pep Boy techs call in all the time, is the A/C compressor clutch cycled or continuous? Well look at the godamn compressor! How do you set the cams at TDC? We've literally stopped taking their calls.

Im not just directing towards Pep Boys but all other shops too.
I've seen Timing belts say "Made In Italy"???

What the hell..

My point is, these customers are the ones that come in for problems that persist after they've just had a repair done at a shop his uncles best friend's cousin's second wife knows.

Do the right hting, take your car to the dealer and let us get your car running better.
