OEM vs. aftermarket rear bumper

My rear bumper was damaged in an accident. The other party admitted fault. His insurance agency (Farmers) wants to replace the cover with an aftermarket part.

It's unfortunate that even though I wasn't at fault, I've been asked use a non-OEM part as a replacement.

Should I try to stick with OEM instead? It's only a plastic rear cover, but I read about problems with the fit and quality of non-OEM parts.

thanks,
- Charles

I would insist on oem instead of "oem-replacement" parts to avoid any potential fitment or quality issues.

You need to get your insurance company involved. Tell your INS company that you wont settle for anything less than equal replacement (OEM). Let them deal with the other company's insurance company.

Exactly. Tell your insurance company that you want genuine OEM Acura/Honda parts and let them deal with the other party. You don't need to get involved, thats why you have insurance

Good luck trying to get the insurance company to give you a OEM bumper. They will give you a OEM bumper only if there is no aftermarket subtitute and it's legal in California. The best thing to do is talk to the shop that is reparing your car to give you a OEM bumper instead of a aftermarket one. The price difference should be less than a $100, it's a tiny hit to the shop if they want your business.

My friends Altima was rear ended too, needed a new bumper but the insurance company said no to his request for a OEM bumper. He spoke to the shop owner and they agreed to give him a OEM bumper. Even gave him a copy of the receipt showing the OEM bumper purchase from a local Nissan dealer.

I just had my '08 bumper cover rplaced with an OEM one (not my fault). The difference in price was $60. The repair shop had an OEM in stock but would have needed to order an aftermarket one - 2-3 days shipiing on top of rental cost. That 2-3 days would cost an additional $90 in rental fees. Rear cover replaced, painted for $475.
