New 04 Navigation Issue?

This problem has been going on for a while. It started rebooting so I thought it was the DVD in the trunk dying. I sent it in to Alpine to get refurbished. They sent it back and I installed it back into my car. Still doesn't work. It only starts up to the screen where you enter the code. I try to enter it but the touch screen is unresponsive. I sent it back to Alpine to look at it again but the said its fine. Does anyone know whats going on. I'm moving to Chicago in a couple weeks and need to get this fixed. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Diagnoistic for "Display unit buttons or touch screen buttons do not work or respond properly", the notes say "also check Display Unit, Harness/fuses/switches".

In the diagonstic, if ALL buttons/touch screen don't work the diagnostic goes through finding a bad connection/wire/ground/short. If some work, you can use a test mode of the system (entered by using "Menu +Map/Guide+Cancel" at the same time and holding for 5 seconds, or if at the CODE screen holding down "Menu+Zoom Out")...but be careful playing with this.

This specific info valid for 04-05 Navi models only.

I don't have an answer for you. But my 04 navi drive just died 3 years ago. I bought a used drive from someone on this forum for 700bucks and popped it in. Been working great ever since. But there are 2 minor incompatibilities.

Just curious, do you have an aux input to the radio head unit installed? This sometimes freezes up the navi screen.

I do have a Sirius radio with the FM direct connect adapter. I don't know if that could be a problem since it just uses the antenna cable. I will try the first sugestion and if that doesn't work I'll take it appart and try disconnect that and see what happens. Thanks

Well no, if you only use the fm frequency for your satellite radio then that probably is not the problem. On my car i made the special connector that plugs into the back of the radio head unit. So i had to splice into the wire, but this causes an occasional freeze up of the navi screen. This happened with other people as well who used this setup.

The way i fix it and unfreeze the navi screen is to temporarily unplug the connection from the back of the radio head unit, start the car and allow the navi to start to boot up, then plug the connection back in. It then registers the connection and starts working again. This only happens about twice a year.

I have my dash all ripped apart now. The touch screen doesn't register any touches. I tried the menu zoom out at the code screen but that doesn't do anything. I tried disconnecting it and turning it on then reconnecting it but that does nothing. Any more ideas. I checked the fuses that I thought were associated with the touchscreen and they were good.

I wish i had an answer for you. Do you know for sure if your navi dvd drive went bad or is it still good? When you start the car does the drive fan turn on with your head in the trunk listening to it?

I start the car and the navigation splash screen comes up and then goes to the code screen. I don't know for sure it went bad but the problems it was having before and the reading I had done here made it look that way. They did fix something with the drive and that shouldn't be a problem anymore. Is there a place to find the diagnostic duckdodgers is talking about so I could look for a short or wiring issue?

It's a huge list of steps...you NEED the service manual to try it (about 80+ pages)

I got the service manual and went through the steps. Think I got some problems with the wiring between the Nav unit and the Display. Think I am just going to look for a new wiring harness for the thing. Anyone know the best place to find one?

You can try here and dig in the online parts system, but you need to know exactly what harness you need...probably better at a stealership...sorry.
