Navi problems! help, please.

My navi seems to be malfunctioning. Recently, every so often when I start my car, my navi system searches for the GPS sattelite and tells me to wait while it calculates my location. I took it to the dealer and they said it was my TINT in my back window messing up my signal, but I've never had the problem with my tint b4. So they diagnose it as being a bad battery, and they replace it. I could believe that because Ive had several problems with hard starts, battery died on me when I was playing a cd for quite a while, etc. Ive tested it a couple of times, and sometimes it says to replace it, sometimes it says its ok. Well anyway, they replaced the battery, but now today it happened again. Can anyone give me any insight into my problem?

What kind of tint do you have on the rear window? (ceramic or metallic?)

I assume metallic if it is just a regular black tint? (brand name of the film i believe was solarguard, or something) Yes it is still happening after the battery was replaced. They had told me the navi depends on the system being 12 volts, so I assumed that the battery replacement would solve the problem. Could it really be my tint?

Its the tint. My local shop tinted mine in all 5% metallic and swore up and down it would not affect anything. Well, lets say he spent about 4 hours removing while I watched to make sure he didn't f' up my defroster lines or interior. He retinted the back window with a non metallic tint and everything was fine. If you go into the diagnostic screen, you will see how many satellites you are receiving. You should have atleast 3 within 30 seconds and about 8+ after driving a few minutes. With the metallic tint, it took about 10 minutes to even get 2-3 satellites and never more than 5. With the non metallic tint, I have 10-12 satellites in about 2 minutes of driving.
TAKE OFF THE TINT

yup-i got a metallic tint and my navi hasn't been the same since. It still works fine on the highway, road trips, etc., but doesn't fare so well on back roads

With that GPS antenna on the back deck, I would definitely get Ceramic tint if you guys have Navi. I have ceramic tint on all windows and it hasn't effected my Navi, radar, radio, Sirius, or TV reception.

I dont think it is your tint because the GPS satellite signal should be able to go through cement walls and stuff. Unless you start your car up in the 5th underground parking floor of a huge skyscraper.

Metallica tint in direct vicinity to the antenna and walls of concrete around your car are two totally different scenarios.... it's definitely plausible that it's the tints

I don't think it's the tint, since you state you never had a problem before.

Unless Osama the Fucker is shooting down satelites (sp?), I would say it is a software issue. I have noticed a lot of dotted lines depicting non-digitized roads/streets in my Navi system that seem to be stored in memory somewhere. Given that it is a Windows-based OS, maybe this (or something similar) is slowing or screwing up your system?

Good luck and keep us updated.

i'm pretty sure GPS satellites need line of sight and cannot receive a signal through concrete. did you ever go to your navi diagnostics screen while your car was parked in a parking garage? no satellit signal. the TSX also monitors speed and has a gyro sensor to estimate turns and velocity when no signal is detected...

Navi just reset on me again. Another thing does anyone experience the screen being on but not accessible. Meaning I start the car, dont touch the navi screen at all, but you can tell it is on but nothing is on the screen. I dont know what's going on with my navi, should I just remove the tint or take it back to the dealer? My warranty is almost up 3k miles left!

dude if u start ur car and don't touch the screen it kinda goes into "Sleep" mode since ur obviously not using it. U have to touch "OK" on that disclaimer screen to really start using it. have u not figured that out by now?

Perhaps I wasnt clear, I start the car, "acura navi" screen does not show up nor does the "ok" confirmation screen, I cannot access any functions ie ac, audio, etc. I can tell the screen is on because it is glowing. It looks like its not connected to a source but it is on. It's locked up or something I then restarted my car several times, with no luck. Then I finnaly ejected the disc, (that did the trick) it then made me wait till it found its signal which took 5 min or so. I talked to the tint shop and they confirmed it is a mettalic tint but they have not had problems with it before. I got the tint on 01/22/05 and it has not had any problems until now. Im just trying to save the money on removing it, but I still have doubts it's the tint, but like others have said it may be. Has anyone experienced my symptoms?

Really? when you go to the diagnostics screen (Menu+Map+Cancel buttons) satellites show up in the appropriate menu?

i know the navi will "guesstimate" while driving in tunnels and garages and such until it regains satellite link...so it will seem like you have the connection.
